Should be on every Pastor's shelf...

"Battered into Submission" blows away the myth that spousal abuse doesn't happen in Christian homes, or that it doesn't happen any more. Using statistical and anecdotal data, the authors reveal undeniably how spousal abuse is ubiquitous in the Christian landscape. They map the denominations and doctrinal groups in which a woman is most at risk of abuse.
Although the data relates to the 1970's the book remains relevant. Most importantly, it delineates how the most usual counselling received from Christian counsellers to women who have already suffered abuse, in fact tends to perpetuate the abusive situation. Pastors who believe "things have changed" would do well to measure their own performance against this analysis as a check up on whether they are unconscious contributors to perpetuating spousal abuse.
This book, or some other as unblinkingly willing to face the facts of pastoral complicity in spousal abuse, should be required reading for every Christian worker who purposes to provide pastoral care or counselling.

Good book.

Read this book for a seminary class. I was really impressed. It looked at domestic abuse and gave responsible Christian answers. I would recommend this book to all pastors, theology students, and Christians alike. Excellent!

Helpful Scriptural Insight

Although it's been several years since I read this book, I do remember the insight it provided on an oft-quoted passage of scripture: Malachi 2:16. This passage, where God decrees that He hates divorce, has often been cited by many well-meaning Christians as a way of prohibiting divorce. Yet this book makes a strong case that there are situations beyond adultery that warrant divorce. While I do not remember the translation quoted, I do remember being startled by the complete set of verses: "I hate divorce, and I hate a man who clothes himself and his wife with violence."

The authors make a tremendous case for divorce in cases of abuse and abandonment. If memory serves correctly, they argue that abuse and abandonment in any area (emotional, physical, financial, etc.) violate and break the marriage vows.

I found this book extremely helpful when I was in an emotionally abusive marriage. My counselor at the time recommended it. Reading the authors' explanation shed a lot of light on my situation and ultimately helped me realize that how I was being treated was not God's plan for me.

About the Author
Professor Striebig received his PhD from The Pennsylvania State University, engineering school. He has served as editor on major journals in his subject area such as the Journal of Engineering for Sustainable Development. He has led major, funded, award-winning research activities, including the U.S. EPA study in West Africa. Professor Striebig has written several book chapters, numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, and presented at many peer-reviewed conferences.

Professor Ogundipe has previously held academic positions at Stevens Institute of Technology and the Polytechnic Institute of New York University. He has a Ph.D from Stevens Institute of Technology. His current areas of specialization and scholarship include Life Cycle Analysis, Industrial Ecology, and developing methods for assessing sustainability.

Professor Papadakis is a political economist with expertise in energy management and the role of energy in sustainable development. Dr. Papadakis' research has been published in specialized reports of the National Science Foundation, and in such journals as Evaluation and Program Planning, Journal of Technology Transfer, The Scientist, and the International Journal of Technology Management.

About the Author
Dr. Ron Larson is a professor of mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught since 1970. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado and is considered the pioneer of using multimedia to enhance the learning of mathematics, having authored over 30 software titles since 1990. Dr. Larson conducts numerous seminars and in-service workshops for math educators around the country about using computer technology as an instructional tool and motivational aid. He is the recipient of the 2013 Text and Academic Authors Association Award for CALCULUS, the 2012 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: AN APPLIED APPROACH, the 2011 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for PRECALCULUS: REAL MATHEMATICS, REAL PEOPLE, and the 1996 Text and Academic Authors Association TEXTY Award for INTERACTIVE CALCULUS (a complete text on CD-ROM that was the first mainstream college textbook to be offered on the Internet). Dr. Larson authors numerous textbooks including the best-selling Calculus series published by Cengage Learning. Dr. Bruce H. Edwards is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Florida. Professor Edwards received his B.S. in Mathematics from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Dartmouth College. He taught mathematics at a university near Bogota, Colombia, as a Peace Corps volunteer. While teaching at the University of Florida, Professor Edwards has won many teaching awards, including Teacher of the Year in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Liberal Arts and Sciences Student Council Teacher of the Year, and the University of Florida Honors Program Teacher of the Year. He was selected by the Office of Alumni Affairs to be the Distinguished Alumni Professor for 1991-1993. Professor Edwards has taught a variety of mathematics courses at the University of Florida, from first-year calculus to graduate-level classes in algebra and numerical analysis. He has been a frequent speaker at research conferences and meetings of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He has also coauthored a wide range of award winning mathematics textbooks with Professor Ron Larson.

Great book in teaching the concepts but, a garbage; doesn't give answers to even # problems.

Very nice way taught and made mathematics easy to understand. Very happy and thankful for that.
But, then why only two stars? Because, Mr.Larson is like all other garbage writers who provide no answers to the odd problems and the examples don't cover all the concepts. What the Grab. You don't want the students to succeed. Why don't you read the book by Professor Blitzer whose even number problems have the same techniques and concepts asked as odd number problems . What a garbage.

I purchased this book when I was a student at my first university, only used it for the first semester of calculus, and then transferred to another school where they used a different (inferior textbook). I took three more calculus courses after transferring and almost never used the other book except to do the homework assignments. I am now a math tutor at the school and use the Larson book almost exclusively and my students love it. The examples are very clear and you can view detailed solutions to the odd numbered problems on the text's companion website. I can pretty much guarantee that by using this book your calculus will improve.

Book Condition

This was a bit expensive for a used book, as I am a stem major, I prefer to have a active working copy. If you are just using this to get a class out of the way then consider a digital copy or renting.The layout of the book is fine and easily understood.

-Shipping was Great! Next day prime shipping helped me study over the weekend for a test I had on Monday.

-The out side cover is damaged and has scratches across the front of the book. Residual glue from stickers. Also had to remove more stickers from the book cover. Some of the pages were folded inward and creased.

-Though I buy the book for the content inside and not based off the look, I do believe that for the price it should come in better condition.

Francis' story: another Rogue meets his match

While I enjoyed this book, I don't agree with the previous reviewer that it is better than the previous Company of Rogues books. I didn't find it as breathtaking or compelling as either Nicholas's or Lucien's stories in the first two books.
Francis Middlethorpe is a sweet, gentle and caring man, who is half-way in love with Nicholas's wife Eleanor but knows he must marry to ensure the continuation of his title and line. He is on the point of becoming engaged to Anne Peckworth, a duke's daughter; then he meets Serena Riverton, widow of a man dubbed Randy Riverton by the ton and whose marriage - entered into when she was 15 - had been an appalling, abusive sexual servitude. Running away from her brothers' attempts to sell her into another distasteful marriage, she wonders whether life as Lord Middlethorpe's mistress might be more congenial - so she seduces him.
As a result, Francis - being an honourable man - feels that he has no choice but to marry her. But the lack of trust between them, added to Serena's own preconceptions about marriage and sex, mean that their relationship is uneasy. A man who was a virgin until his wife seduced him, and a woman who views 'bed-work' as something to be endured and in which she must not display any reluctance, have a lot of difficulties to overcome.
Fans of Lucien and Beth, and of Nicholas and Eleanor, will find their heroes making several appearances in these pages. Francis's wonderful aunt, Arabella, also takes a secondary role. And just who is Felicity, Miles's wild ward? And will she reappear in a later Company of Rogues novel?
The only aspect of this book I really didn't like was the way Beverley handled the secondary romance. In particular, the scenes in which this was being resolved seemed to me to be farcical in the extreme (relying on confusions such as those following from there being two Lady Middlethorpes, for example), though I also found Francis's mother's blackmail tale, in the second chapter, unconvincing. I'm sure this aspect of the book could have been handled better.
However, that aside, Beverley handles Serena's traumatic past with delicacy and care, and she and Francis make a lovely couple.

One of the best in the Company of Rogues series

For me, FORBIDDEN ties with its immediate predecessor CHRISTMAS ANGEL for the position of second best book in the Company of Rogues series (my very favourite is AN UNWILLING BRIDE). Like all the Rogues novels, it's extremely original. The hero--Francis Haile, Lord Middlethorpe--is a virgin...highly unusual for a young Regency blood. The heroine, Serena Riverton, on the other hand, is only too experienced. She had been married--her husband died shortly before the beginning of the story--but she's no ordinary widow. She was married off at a young age to the depraved Sir Matthew "Randy" Riverton; over the eight years of their marriage she was essentially her husband's sex slave, or as he put it, his "well-trained wife" (by the way, I once read a description of FORBIDDEN which cautioned that some readers might be disturbed by the references to Serena's abusive first marriage. However, though Riverton _was_ a monster, there's nothing gratuitous about these references--unlike in some romances, where the heroines' sexual abuse by the villains _is_ presented in a titillating manner). Then, just months after widowhood frees Serena from the nightmare that was her first marriage, she learns that her loathsome brothers plan to sell her into marriage to a man like her late husband (or, if she refuses to cooperate, to sell her into a brothel). Her only option is to flee.
She and Francis are thrown together when he stops to offer her a ride after overtaking her on a lonely country road as a violent storm is about to break. They're forced to take refuge in a farmhouse for the night-- posing as husband and wife, since their host is a religious zealot--and in desperation, Serena seduces Francis early the next morning while he's still half-asleep, hoping that he'll make her his mistress: she's despaired of finding any respectable sanctuary, and has concluded that her best hope lies in becoming a high-priced courtesan.
Francis _is_ bewitched by her. But, he's also deeply suspicious of her. Moreover, he had been on the verge of proposing to a respectable young lady out of a sense of duty to marry suitably and carry on the family line; now those plans have been thrown into turmoil (incidentally, I really take exception the publisher's description of Anne Peckworth--the woman Francis was about to become betrothed to when he met Serena--as "dull". Though quiet and proper, she was actually a very nice young lady, and there was a genuine poignancy about her unrequited feelings for Francis. I think it's greatly to Jo Beverley's credit that she _didn't_ make Anne an insipid bore who Francis would feel no compunction over dropping--or who Serena would feel no guilt over supplanting). The story of how Serena and Francis' relationship develops from these inauspicious beginnings is a captivating one.

*Spoiler Alerts* They get married because she rapes him

I was intrigued going into this story. The book starts off our heroine being sexually objectified by pretty much all the men in her life (including the hero albeit in a obvious way) because she was 'built for sex' and has seductress eyes. Umm, okay. I've never met a person with an eye shape that seduces but, sure, we'll go with it.

However, I was completely put off shortly into the book when the heroine rapes the hero after he repeatedly turns her down. She waits for him to be half asleep and she basically has sex with him before he's even fully awake. This is why they get together. Does she feel bad about it afterwards? Yes. Does she try to make amends? Sort of. She literally takes his virginity from him without his consent. She believes it's that all men want this. Well, he had already rejected her a few times so she already knew that HE DIDN'T WANT TO. She's had a very brief violent understanding to sex given the tiny glimpses we get into her marriage. She knows what it means to have someone do something to do you that you don't want and be forced to suffer through it. Does that stop her from doing it others/him? No, it doesn't. The fact that she was sexually abused DOES NOT GIVE HER THE RIGHT TO RAPE SOMEONE ELSE. Period.

But, for some reason, I kept reading. At least until the part where he calls her all sorts of sexually degrading names based on a, largely incomprehensible, theory. After he yells at her, Beverley writes that she hits him *and he hits her back* at which point she knocks him out with something. Wow. Seriously? We're adding domestic violence to this tidy little historical romance? For reals? Sigh. That's the point where I put the book down and asked amazon for a refund for this book because it contains 'offensive content'. Eff that ish.

Not impressed heretofore

I read The Templar Legacy over a decade ago and I have eagerly awaited each new Cotton Malone book since. I preordered this book nearly four months ago. I am currently about 30% into this book and I'm not impressed. With other CM books I would read for hours until my eyes watered. They were proverbial page turners. Not so much yet with this point. I have had to put the book down several times. It had been my impression that Mr. Berry was a thorough and dedicated researcher. The style and tone of this book almost sems like it was written by someone else. Some passages feel like they were taken from Wikipedia, a few words deleted or moved and put into the book.
I refer to the books description of a Soviet RA-115 (suitcase nukes). The definition given in the book on page 55 (Kindle) says,

An RA-115 "..."is engineered to last for years, so long as it's wired to a power source. In case of a loss of power, a battery backup is provided. If the battery runs low, the weapon had a transmitter that sends a coded message by satellite to a Russian embassy or consulate"

The Wikipedia entry on the RA-115 says,

"They can last for many years if wired to an electric source. In case there is a loss of power, there is a battery backup. If the battery runs low, the weapon has a transmitter that sends a coded message either by satellite or directly to a GRU post at a Russian embassy or consulate.

The passages are nearly identical. Is Mr. Berry using a ghostwriter?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I own all of Steve Berry's books. This one is my favorite by far. Having grown up in Erie County New York there was always talk of Canada becoming part of the US. This is a must read book. The 20th Amendment is thoroughly explained. It is interesting who becomes president if something happens to the President. It is true that on the evening of the State of the Union one of the cabinet members will not be there. That person is the person who will be the next president if something happens to the President Vice-President and the other cabinet members. Great read. I hope who ever reads this book will thoroughly enjoy it as much as I have. I forgot another important part of the book. The storyline centers around Benjamin Tallmadge's journal and the Society of Cincinnati. I wanted to learn more about the Society of Cincinnati but couldn't find any information. I did down load Benjamin Tallmadge's memoir that he left for his son. Benjamin Tallmadge was the spymaster for George Washington and the Culper Ring. A lot of research went into this book. Best of Steve Berry yet.

I enjoy the historical stimulation

Steve Berry gets us involved with these secrets of our nation that never fully evolved into movements. They still have adherents not only from our past but from the world's past. In this novel, he blends secrets from the Soviet Union with the present far-flung intelligence network of the US. The result keeps us in our seats to find out each intricate step in the development of the fascinating moves of Cotton Malone and his colleagues. In the midst of the action, Berry continues to educate us about our own history and the ongoing need for vigilance. I enjoy the historical stimulation, the ongoing action, portrayal of the emotions and entanglements of his main character. I leave the book behind looking forward to Berry's next creation.

After Haiti’s 2010 earthquake, over half of U.S. households donated to thousands of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in that country. Yet we continue to hear stories of misery from Haiti. Why have NGOs failed at their mission?

Set in Haiti during the 2004 coup and aftermath and enhanced by research conducted after the 2010 earthquake, Killing with Kindness analyzes the impact of official development aid on recipient NGOs and their relationships with local communities. Written like a detective story, the book offers rich enthnographic comparisons of two Haitian women’s NGOs working in HIV/AIDS prevention, one with public funding (including USAID), the other with private European NGO partners. Mark Schuller looks at participation and autonomy, analyzing donor policies that inhibit these goals. He focuses on NGOs’ roles as intermediaries in “gluing” the contemporary world system together and shows how power works within the aid system as these intermediaries impose interpretations of unclear mandates down the chain—a process Schuller calls “trickle-down imperialism.”

Mark Schuller is an assistant professor of anthropology and NGO Leadership Development at Northern Illinois University. Straightforward analyses of 2 types of NGOs with attention to gender dynamics

An extremely straightforward explanation of how different NGOs work on the ground. From short reflections from his field work, Schuller expands out to assess two types of NGOs: ones funded mostly by governmental sources and others funded privately. He examines different variables (management hierarchies, mission statements, place of operation, gender dynamics) to offer a contemporary reading of how NGOs are (and aren't helpful) in addressing poverty.

Haiti and other third world countries cannot be fixed by Americans dropping cash via Paypal.
The US is now becoming a third world country due to illegal aliens and many Americans are homeless due to illegal aliens displacing them in the very competetive housing and job market.
Haiti is an ongoing disaster due to unlimited breeding and no birth control. They also live in cement houses in an earthquake zone and in the the book " A Guide to the End of the World" , it was explained that death from Earthquakes is usally due to poor housing choices.
Starbucks started a campaign to donate to Haiti and I boycotted them for two years.

Best Poons Book So Far

I've been a fan of Larry Poons' work for several decades, beginning with his "floating lozenges" phase and continuing through the so-called "elephant skin" paintings to his more recent, more colorful, more gestural canvases. I have always been frustrated that no one has written a work covering his five decade career, but this book covers more of it than any other--and it has some nice reproductions. The emphasis seems to be on the poured paintings and the highly textured canvases of the late 70's and 80's--many of them in subdued earthy colors, as can be seen on the cover. If you like this phase of Poons's career, then this is the book for you--though it's a bit pricey at over two hundred dollars. Some readers will enjoy the interview and introductory essay, though frankly the introductory essay lost me somewhat, with its discussion of the relationship between Poons' paintings and fractal geometry. I can't quite believe that my mind is supposed to dwell on chaos theory as I ponder these canvases. At the same time, I believe that these works call for a more-than-visceral response. Certainly I agree with the contention that these canvases are not meant to represent dried river beds or mineral formations--or anything else, since Poons's intentions have always been painterly. Instead, for me, they are about surface and texture, about the nature of paint--and whatever metaphors result from the observation of these qualities. So my bottom line contention is that this a good book for Poons fans with discretionary income, at least until the complete retrospective I hope for is published.
