I like the book for its content but the print quality and the paper used is sub-standard. Some of the photo pages are stuck to the print pages and had to be pried apart leading to damage.

A solid, but the mostly usable book...

While I've found the glowing reviews here to be accurate in their comments, there are issues with this book that I find render it a bit impracticable, and hence not particularly usable for the home cook.

First I join others in commending the writer on the concept, the effort, the authenticity, the references, and the execution. Surely the recipes are well tested and are impeccable. However the buyer should be forewarned that the recipes here regularly call for massive quantities of ghee (3/4 cup for example in the recipe for baingan bharta, which serves 4--and this is typical). The type of cooking in the book is definitely restaurant-style, with all that entails. If that's what you're looking for, or if you only want a few special-occasion dishes this book is just right for you. If however you're looking for something with a balance of dishes that are more practical, healthy and the type of home-style cooking that you find you can do for every day, this is not what you'll be getting in this book.

Again though--for what it is, it's a very nice book, and it contains solid information. The practicality and usability are just the issues. I'm glad I have it as a reference, but I find it's not a book that I regularly turn to, or have come to rely upon.

Improvement to be implemented immediately.

Firstly i found the paper of poor quality, the pictures were not clear so the true color was not showing and lastly i was looking for Rumali Roti recipie which was missing in the indian bread section. Overall the recepies are good. I wish the author could send me a hands on instruction on rumali roti.
The price could be raised but definately the above mentioned improvement should be implemented.

Wow! Unique and beautiful, great information

I've been looking forward to a book like this. It's magic! The typeset art is astounding, so different! And it really helps to transmit difficult information. The Tibetans are always so circumspect about tantra. This book speaks volumes about Yabyum, highest tantra yoga, in plan English and really tasty poetry. Some of it is over my head, but it feels empowered with magic, true magic. It's definitely a limited edition collector's item, if you love books and treasure the pure creation of enlightened spirits!

I too have sought, travelled, learned, received blessings and empowerments and teachings from far-flung gurus. If I were to write a book - and I probably will - it would look a lot like this. I think it is a preview of how things will look when the sleeping part of women's DNA wakes up and expresses itself.

Incredible detail of every facet of fabricating a watch

This book is amazing. I have just received the latest edition, and cannot believe the wealth of detail and knowledge presented by George Daniels. This book is a masterwork, by a master of his art.

It's not just for watchmakers; anyone interested in any kind of precision fabrication, metalworking, metal finishing, or tool making will find much of value in this book. Mr. Daniel's writing style is straight forward and to the point, no wasted words. You will feel as if he is watching over your shoulder, patiently instructing you in exactly what to do, how to do it, and why you are doing it.

The book provides a level of detail that is stunning in its completeness, from making your own precision tools and using them, machining the parts, making your own polishing and grinding compounds, all the way to engraving and finishing, and finishing with constructing and using apparatus to test the accuracy of a watch.

This is an extremely detailed and thorough treatise on how to design, fabricate, decorate, and test a watch. The only way to get a better education at watch fabrication would be to apprentice yourself to George Daniels.

Highly, I say again, HIGHLY recommended.

The best, but skip if you own the Third Edition

This is arguably the last word in watchmaking, generously and clearly written and illustrated to provide just about every practical piece of information you need.

I have owned the Third Edition for some time, and was very excited to see an update, especially in the wake of Mr. Daniels' passing in October 2011. I was disappointed to find that the only updates seem to be two color photos of Mr. Daniels, eight small photos of his shop from 2010, and the changing of "fifty years" to "sixty years" in the Acknowledgements. The Preface is still called "Preface to the Third Edition." The table of contents and index are also identical.

So, if you are one of those lucky ones who already own the Third Edition, you're probably better off saving your money. If you weren't able to obtain one, and are somehow living without this amazing tome, you owe it to yourself to buy it now.

Beautiful book!

If you are a horologist, you need and will treasure this book. If you need to google that term, you may very well enjoy this book for its masterful illustrations and precise diagrams. Some may even consider it a worthy coffee table book, although I think that's a role fit best by lighter reading with many more pictures.

Watchmaking is a rather technical guide that expects you to know the basic terminiology and 'anatomy' of the watch. It gives guidance for setting-up your workshop, acquiring the right tools/materials, and the processes for making a watch. By learning from the late George Daniels, you have a real opportunity to become a master timekeeper! To supplement your education you can find great stuff online and for repairs, look to Henry Fried's The Watch Repairer's Manual.
