Amazon.com Review
The OpenGL graphics libraries offer programmers the ability to construct and render remarkably realistic 3-D scenes that can incorporate multiple lighting sources, various types of perspective, and various special effects. The OpenGL Programming Guide is a comprehensive and definitive resource on using the extensive capabilities offered by OpenGL. Beginning with coverage of basic OpenGL objects--points, lines, and polygons--it advances through functions for selecting colors, lighting, reflective properties, texture, atmospheric haze, and more. Basic concepts of 3-D graphics are made accessible with analogies to cameras, and advanced sidebars and appendices go into deep detail about OpenGL.

From the Back Cover

OpenGL is a powerful software interface for graphics hardware that allows graphics programmers to produce high-quality color images of 3D objects. The functions in the OpenGL library enable programmers to build geometric models, view models interactively in 3D space, control color and lighting, manipulate pixels, and perform such tasks as alpha blending, antialiasing, creating atmospheric effects, and texture mapping.

The OpenGL Programming Guide, Second Edition, shows how to create graphics programs, many of which highlight features of the latest OpenGL release. Assuming users have a background in C programming, the book discusses the architecture and functions of OpenGL, Version 1.1.

The second edition contains the following additions and improvements:

  • coverage of the new features of OpenGL, Version 1.1, including all texturing changes, vertex arrays, polygon offset, and RGBA logical operations
  • the incorporation of the OpenGL Utility Toolkit, GLUT, in all programming examples
  • an overview of the OpenGL rendering pipeline and state machine
  • enhanced coverage of polygon tessellation, quadric surfaces, pixel operations, and error handling
  • more performance tips
  • a greatly expanded index

The OpenGL Technical Library provides tutorial and reference books for OpenGL. The library enables programmers to gain a practical understanding of OpenGL and show them how to unlock its full potential.

The OpenGL Technical Library is developed under the auspices of the Architecture Review Board (ARB), an industry consortium responsible for guiding the evolution of OpenGL and related technologies. The OpenGL ARB is composed of industry leaders such as Digital Equipment Corporation, Evans & Sutherland, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Intergraph, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, and Silicon Graphics.

Simply best place to learn OpenGL
By A Customer
As consumer grade 3D accelerators began to support the OpenGL ICD many Win32 programmers are using the OpenGL 3D API to develop real-time 3D applications. This new breed of OpenGL developers are looking for a good place to start. The Offical Guide to Learning OpenGL (also refered to as "the redbook") is that starting place.
Mason Woo and the OpenGL Review Board, along with other contributors walk the reader though well thought out example programs and explain in detail each OpenGL function call. The chapters are well organized, and authors take a complete platform independate approach to OpenGL. An excellent choice for a college text book on the subject of real-time 3D graphic programming.
The only other book to be considered is the OpenGL SuperBible, but it's poorly organized in comparison and focuses only on the Win32 platform. This book should only be considered if the reader is new to programming and needs to be walked though setting up the development enviroment (such reads should consider going back and learning more about their IDE before venturing into OpenGL programming anyway)
For overall content, reference and presentation the OpenGL Programming Guide is the best book I've read covering any API.

good
By A Customer
Well, this book is pretty good. It explains some nice math calculations for things if you wish to do them yourself (which i think is a good idea). If you're like me, you've probably downloaded some demo effects done in openGL, and if they're fullscreen... they're usually extremely slow (no openGL ICD). You really shouldn't be discouraged, this book tells you how to do things the easy way, straight openGL. It isn't a bad idea for just learning and whatnot. But you obviously won't reach fast fps by doing so, espically in fullscreen modes. If you program Pure win32api, you'll have to learn on your own how to set the pixel format and establish windows, they're not covered in this book because it's win32 functions, and as they say in the book... they want to be general enough for you to do them in any platform, that's why they cover GLUT in this book... mostly to assign camera angles, windows, ideling..... what have you. The best thing you can do is use CreateWindow() and SetPixelFormat() to do openGL in windows. It's easy after that, get the hDC of the dialog, and establish a HGLRC and start drawing... down forget to releast the DC in the end... Back to the book, it's very good for all ranges of programmers, but use it mostly for reference... unless you wanna overuse GLUT like this book does. And as for GLAUX... it's better to learn 3d geometric object handling on your own... but whatever you think...

Strong Buy ! A 3D image says a 1000 words
By Golden Lion
I have taught Opengl for four years. I've found the best results by teaching from the OpenGL programming guide. Students are lectured from the material in the book, numerous examples are provided illustrating the concepts and principles of 3D programming and opengl function calls. I use VRML 2.0 to demonstrating the code examples, and student can read the opengl code for the example. During the Semester students use the OpenGL programming Guide to create a 3D game. The game uses movable cameras, hierarchial motion, collision detection, display lists, texture maps, materials, lighting, and nurb surfaces. The material is absorbed within a 5 to 10 week period. I've tried other books like the OpenGL superbible, but found the Opengl Programming Guide to be much more comprehensive, and therefore more productive in the results. The OpenGL Programming Guide is a book to keep. Some of the new features in the current release is : introduction to interleave arrays, new glut libraries, and increased documentation on picking, selection and feedback. Get on the Game Programming bandwagon by buying this book. Email me with any additional questions.

Review
"The justification for chemical research - a case often made during this International Year of Chemistry - is usually utilitarian. Of the 'basic' sciences, chemistry is arguably the most applied and potentially useful for 'relieving mankind's estate', as Francis Bacon put it. But this aspect also leaves chemistry uniquely vulnerable to charges of despoliation: it puts plastics in the oceans, endocrine disruptors in the water, ozone destroyers and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
At a simplistic level, both claims are true. Perhaps the hardest task for the public image of chemistry is to convince that, if economic and industrial development are desirable, many chemical problems must have a chemical solution.
Not only were the hazards of chlorofluorocarbons revealed largely by atmospheric chemists, but their safe replacements are the fruits of academic and industrial chemical research. Should anyone question that desirability of development in the first place, the chemist's answer is clear: as Stephen Matlin and Berhanu Abegaz explain in their introduction to this volume, most variation in life expectancy between countries is explained by differences in their technological development.
Chemistry is central to several of the Millennium goals adopted by the UN in 2000: to eradicate severe hunger, reduce child and maternal mortality, combat disease and achieve environmental sustainability. It's not just the positives, like new medicines, that count: better chemistry can reduce pollution and, one hopes, greenhouse gas emissions. This useful book explores all of these ways in which chemistry might benefit our global future.
That case can risk looking like whitewash or propaganda. It's not an accusation that can be levelled at this sober, responsible book; but one can't help noticing that behind the impressive goals and achievements lie political and social questions - how are resources allocated and priorities set, how can ethics coexist with market imperatives - that in the end might determine chemistry's real potential to help or hinder."

A Global Perspective on Chemistry's Great Benefits
By WIZARD D
The Chemical Element, Chemistry's Contribution to our Global Future, is a superbly written guidebook regarding the past and future benefits of chemistry and the great good the science has and will achieve for our planet. Since 2011 was the International Year of Chemistry, the book is modeled around the 8 key Millenium Development Goals reported at the Millenium Summit in New York on 6-8 September, 2000. The groundwork is laid to achieve many of these goals.
The first half of the book gets into where we have been and where we are going regarding the sustainability of life on earth through chemistry. A nice timeline is presented with many great achievements and past events which have shaped our present and future. The best example is Fritz Haber's process of fixing nitrogen for fertilizer. This seemingly simple chemical process is what enables us to feed the 7 billion human inhabitants of our planet. Without it, there would be mass starvation. The geopolitics and feasibility of achieving the Millenium Development goals are presented in very great detail. The need for sustainability is stressed throughout.
The second half of the book moves forward with more emphasis on the actual chemical and engineering principles to achieve the goals. In the short term there is improvement of efficiency and saving more of what we already have. In the medium term there is the move to true sustainability and energy and chemical balance. In the long term finally we have achieved the goal of true sustainability. There are many chemical and physical examples of what is being done and can be done to achieve the goals.
The illustrations and graphics are outstanding. Within the text they are black and white, but there is an entire appendix of color plates of every graphic in the book. The book is printed on high quality acid free German Paper, and will last at least 300 years if properly maintained.
This book would make a superb textbook for a course in environmental chemistry or engineering courses with an eye on sustainability. I very strongly recommend it to any chemist, biologist, engineer, science and technology professional, or anyone else who wants to see the human race thrive on the planet earth for many millenia to come. Many outstanding contributions to humanity by chemistry are presented under the guidance of Professor Garcia- Martinez and Doctor Serrano-Torregrosa. There are still many more that need to be made. This fine piece of work will inspire the next generation of chemists, engineers, and politicians to fix our planet. The key element is sustainability. Sustainability is essential to the future progress of humanity, and the chemists and physical scientists hold the solutions.
I thank Amazon for allowing me the courtesy to review this outstanding work.

Overview on How Science - particularly Chemistry - Has Changed the World
By The Spinozanator
This fine book celebrates the role of science - especially chemistry - for the huge advances in technology that have raised so much of world out of poverty. The challenges are greater than ever, however, partly because of burgeoning populations in underdeveloped countries. Humanity is currently imposing unrelenting pressures on earth's resources at the same time that gains of the last three decades for 3rd world countries have begun to wane in some of these countries.

The poor world yearns for relief from poverty but lacks resources in all realms - infrastructure, effective governance, cultures built on bribery, and unfriendly environments to science. This frequently leads to brain-drain in these countries. Many locals who do achieve education in science abroad don't want to return to a country that doesn't have adequate facilities or governmental assistance. The book perhaps doesn't adequately emphasize the obstacles these countries face - instead it paints rosy futures based on those NGOs and governmental agencies attempting to be of help.

US corporations may wear out China (and many other countries), but among third world countries, there is an unlimited supply of incredibly cheap labor for the foreseeable future. When corporations go in, they invariably have the profit motive way ahead of humanitarian goals for that country, especially when it comes to that country's natural resources. The only exceptions happen in those 3rd world countries that have leadership knowledgeable enough and altruistic enough to refrain from lining their own pockets and instead, protect their countries from the predatory tendencies of foreign corporations.

Chemistry is a plateau science when it comes to technology and this book is a wealth of knowledge and colorful visual aids from scientists all over the world. Among the contributors and editors are 10 from the US, 6 from Spain, 5 from Italy, 2 each from France, England, and Canada, and 1 from Botswana. "The Chemical Element" has chapters on:

1. Chemistry for Development
2. The Role of Chemistry in Addressing Hunger and Food Security
3. Poverty
4. The Human Element: Chemistry Education's Contribution to Our Global Future
5. The Impact of Synthetic Chemistry on Human Health
6. The Greening of Chemistry
7. Water: Foundation for a Sustainable Future
8. Facing the Energy Challenges through Chemistry in a Changing World
9. Ozone Depletion and Climate Change

The book uses mnemonics frequently to identify various agencies or entities. At first I had trouble until I figured out that the first letter in the mnemonic identifies that agency in the index. At the same time, a specific mnemonic index would have been helpful.

"The Chemical Element" reflects the truly amazing things the developed world has achieved through science, specifically chemistry. Time will tell whether we can eventually extend these advances to those parts of the world that, for various reasons, have been largely left out.

A Stunning and Concise Review of the Importance of Chemistry in Today's Age.
By R. L. Miles
I have read this book twice front to back and I have found it to be incredibly concise to the present conditions of our societal welfare, economic well-being, & our environmental future.

As a former Chemical Operational Specialist with the U.S. Army, I find it refreshing to review books like this. I didn't become a chemist in order to stand behind a microscope--My purpose was to aid in the greater development of humanity.

United Nations has declared 2011 the International Year of Chemistry, to celebrate the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of humankind. In this book, prominent scientists highlight the major advances in the fight against the largest problems faced by humanity from the point of view of chemistry, showing how science is essential to ensuring our long-term survival.

Even if your not a chemist, I truly believe that you will find this book incredibly rewarding in the way that you view the simple dynamics of chemistry and the way that we act or misuse our approaches to the methodology of science and sociology.

All The Best,
RLM

A Wonderful Guide to the Fringes of Society
By AwesomeName
If you are new to Sociology then you should buy this book. It is written to be both immensely informative and subtly humorous. The author manages to occasionally poke gentle fun at the groups he writes about, but he never goes so far as to insult them. He treats each group with respect, be they Gypsies or Scientologists.

If you are familiar with Sociology then you should still buy this book. Even if you've studied these groups before, even if you think you know them well, there's always something unexpected included here.

The second book in the series that readers call "absolutely epic" with a "phenomenal plot" that makes for a "gripping read."

Book #2 in the They Who Fell Series

The tower is fallen, its residents scattered or dead. A mob of human refugees swarm the city, tossed into a world they haven’t seen in years, and one Jana knows only from distant memories as a child. The ones who tore down her home would have her flee to safety, and to abandon her need to find Rhamiel and know what became of him. But the strike against the angels has returned them to their martial ways, and an army is reforming under the banner of Uzziel with the goal of eliminating any threats to the Seraphim forever. And other castes of angels have agendas of their own, eager to fill the vacuum left by the tower’s collapse.

Backbone but missing intimacy, description and thought
By Bethany Hallam
Gripping, and I just want to know more!

The writing is fairly amateur, but the story has excellent backbone and unlike some fallen angel books, there is reasoning to make the story more plausible. However its also very obvious its written by a man, the love scenes and emotional depth is missing in favour of plenty of warring, diplomatics, poetry to confuse and graphic violence. Expand on Rhamiel, Jana, and others. Tell us what they feel and think, describe their features, their decisions, the wars inside their minds. Without it one cannot fathom what Rhamiel in particular is doing or why. He smirks but cares, shows no intimacy but loves, calls her Jana in front of angels, but Girl to her face. They have shared one night of intimacy but are hopelessly in love, apparently.

Give us more to work with, Kevin!

I thoroughly enjoyed these books and I am eagerly awaiting the next ...
By Amazon Customer
Ok Mr. Kneupper, I am officially hooked. I've devoured the first two books in this series in the last 72 hours only to realize I'm now apparently ahead of your writing. I don't want to wait! For those looking for a gripping, interesting, fast-paced read, start with They Who Fell and you will quickly move on to Chaos Umpire Sits.

This is a dystopian series with a twist. It's not aliens, disease, machines or mankind's failures that end the world as we know it, it's fallen angels. Mr. Kneupper spins a tale the reader can immediately place themselves in and develops characters with such clear personality traits you can see them vividly in your mind. I thoroughly enjoyed these books and I am eagerly awaiting the next one!

Another reader mentioned The Hunger Games and Divergent series seemingly indicating that this series doesn't measure up. I wholeheartedly disagree! I've read them all... Divergent was a poor copycat of The Hunger Games and dragged on longer then the author's imagination. The books and the subsequent movies will satisfy the Tweens appetites and not many more. These books are definitely directed towards a more adult audience and are worth your time. Well done Mr. Kneupper! Now... Please get back to work.

By Cynthia Gilbert
I really enjoyed this read, The book, keeps you going and it click with people. Because all our lives we have heard about Angels and Devil,
But to put it like this make you think and it gives you hope. So Rhamiel gives the hope and Suriel trys to take it away. But you are left with hope for the child. Can't wait for the next book, to find out what happen to Jana and the baby. Don't miss these books, they are good reads

Review
"Forget about the fact that it's a vegetarian's best friend, Plenty is the sort of cookbook that any home cook will fall for. It's as meaty as its meat-filled counterparts." -- Charlotte Druckman, food52.com

Ottolenghi's book "Plenty" rose to be a best seller in Britain on its release last year (it appeared here several months ago), and is among the most generous and luxurious nonmeat cookbooks ever produced, one that instantly reminds us that you don't need meat to produce over-the-top food. -- Mark Bittman, The New York Times

"The flavors in Plenty are so bright, curious and new - to my palate at least - it made me wonder, where is our Middle Eastern Mario? And how quickly can Ottolenghi open in New York?" -- Christine Muhlke, food52.com

"The book that launched the cult. The recipes not only made vegetarian food sexy (note: Ottolenghi wants you to know he loves meat), they also made Western cooks crave Eastern Mediterranean flavors." - Christine Muhlke, bon appetit

About the Author
Yotam Ottolenghi is co-owner of four Ottolenghi restaurants, co-author of Ottolenghi: The Cookbook and author of the weekly New Vegetarian column in the Guardian newspaper. He lives in London.

Jonathan Lovekin is a lifestyle and food photographer based in London.

The Wait was worth it
By drybean
I have been eagerly awaiting the US release of this book since its UK release last year.
I have the (UK version) of the first Ottolenghi book, which is easily my favorite cookery book of my (embarrasingly large) collection. I've never been let down by one of his recipes, and I've made most of them.

I was so excited to receive this in the mail, and I can say that the wait for this book was worth it.
The photography is gorgeous, and for those of you who like a picture to accompany every recipe, you got it.

I love how the book is laid out in chapters by main ingredient. This is especially helpful for those who belong to a CSA/Veg Box scheme and are looking for something to do with the chard/cabbage/leeks etc.

The commentary on each recipe is thoughtful and helpful. The flavor combinations that Mr. Ottolenghi uses are thoughtful and interesting, and often allow us to enjoy a vegetable in a way that we had not previously. I often feel like I'm doing my body a favor by making one of his recipes, given that they feature abundant quantities of fresh vegetables and whole grains.

I've never written a review on Amazon before, but I do rely on them heavily when making purchases, so I wanted to pass on what a gem this book is.

Buy it! Ottolenghi's Plenty is an amazing salute to produce!
By Jennifer Guerrero
I love this book. I bought it because we were all so in love with his other book, Jerusalem. Plenty is vegetarian. Jerusalem is an omnivore book. Both are outstanding.

Everything I've made has been delicious, beautiful, and unusual. His gift with produce, herbs and spices, and technique makes this such a joy to work with. His directions are clear, and the recipes aren't overly complicated. It's easy to reproduce what you see in the photos. There are lovely photographs for many of the recipes. The binding and paper quality is top notch.

Pictured below:
1) Caramelized Garlic Tart. It's positively decadent. A nice green cafe salad was all it needed. My youngest, who detests goat cheese, gobbled hers up and proclaimed it to be the only recipe where goat cheese was fine.
2) The Leek Fritters with their yogurty, garlicky, parsley, cilantro sauce were divine. Once you get the batter together, it's as easy as pancakes.
3) The Soba Noodles with Eggplant and Mango were so flavorful, fabulously fragrant, and pretty.
4) Black Pepper Tofu. Excellent, but it melted our faces off! There's 8 chile peppers and over 1/4 c of smashed peppercorns in there!
5) Multi-Vegetable Paella - p80. Fantastic! And just a smidge spicy.

I can't wait to try the rest of the book! Buy it. If you love produce, you'll adore it!

Beautiful, but poorly organized
By E.K.
I bought this book because the photos were truly striking, the reviews were excellent, and my family is attempting to transition to a predominately plant-based diet. I'd describe myself as a strong intermediate home cook; while I'm not an expert, I like experimenting and am not afraid of unusual ingredients.

My main quibble with this book is how it's organized: by category of vegetable. While it's an interesting concept, rarely does it clearly denote if recipes are intended as appetizers, mains, sides, etc. As someone newer to a plant-based diet, I've found this pretty annoying. On more than one occasion, I've made a dish that seemed like it should have been substantial enough for a main, only to find that it would have made a much more appropriate as a side, either in quantity or composition.

My second point is simply a matter of personal taste. Most of the half dozen or so recipes we've tried have fallen strongly into the "like it, don't love it" category for me. There hasn't yet been a stand-out, excellent crowd-pleasing favorite for my family. For example, we found the gorgeous Eggplant with Buttermilk Sauce dish featured on the cover to be an interesting amalgam of flavors, but just not that...enjoyable, I guess? Though the sauce itself was really good, the combination of the eggplant, pomegranate seeds, sauce and za'atar caused puckered faces around the table. I'm finding that the strong Middle Eastern flavor influence in many of his recipes isn't my personal favorite. This, obviously, is entirely about my own palate and has nothing to do with the quality of the recipes, but since enjoying the fruits of one's labor is the primary purpose of any cookbook, I did think it was important to note that, simply put, I haven't loved any of these recipes.

Overall, this cookbook gets three stars for me at this point, but I'll continue to give it a go. Perhaps I just haven't found the right recipes yet.

Designed for the pilot of piston-engine aircraft who is preparing for turbine ground school, the transitioning military pilot studying for that first corporate or airline interview, or even the old pro brushing up on turbine aircraft operations, this manual covers all the basics, clearly explaining the differences between turbine aircraft and their piston-engine counterparts. It addresses high-speed aerodynamics, coordinating multipilot crews, wake turbulence, and navigating in high-altitude weather. The book is like an operations manual for these complex aircraft, detailing pilot operations that include preflight, normal, emergency, IFR, and fueling procedures. Readers will be introduced to flight dispatch; state-of-the-art cockpit instrumentation, including the flight management system (FMS) and the head-up guidance system (HGS or HUD); and the operating principles of hazard avoidance systems, including weather radar, lightning detectors, and the ground proximity warning system (GPWS). Updated to reflect the newest Federal Aviation Administration regulations and procedures, this new edition also includes a glossary of airline and corporate aviation terminology, handy turbine pilot rules of thumb, and a comprehensive turbine aircraft “Spotter’s Guide.”

Book is good. Printing is...not so great, but readable.
By MissK
The book itself is great. Very helpful for someone transitioning into turbine aircraft.
It covers a lot of subjects that a turbine pilot may need to know about but manages to do it in a very general way so that most of the book is helpful to you no matter what type of turbine aircraft you are going to be flying.

The only issue I have is that many of the pages are sort of...partway double printed? If that makes sense.
I've added a photo to show an example of what I'm talking about.

The first time I came across it, I thought my eyes were going blurry or I was having a stroke or something.
I looked away and nothing else looked doubled, then looked at the top of the page and it was fine. It was just the bottom 1/4 of the page or so.
I showed someone else to make sure I wasn't seeing things. They verified the partial double printing.

The double print issue isn't a HUGE deal, but be ready for it because it can be a little bit scary at first. After you realize what it is, then it's just annoying. It's not the entire book by any means, but I wish it wasn't there at all. I don't know if all of the books are like this, or just mine, but be prepared to see it so you don't get freaked out by it.

Required reading for trasitioning military pilots!
By Mike Q.
Better turbine engine explanations, descriptions, and diagrams than the military pubs I've been studying for the last 17+ years! This book and everything explained for the professional pilot are key for any military pilot to transition to the civilian market. I just got hired and my interviewer was very impressed with my turbine engine knowledge!

Fantastic interview prep
By Tick
As a military pilot going for an airline interview, this book is fantastic for the interview prep. This is brilliant at explaining things, and it seems as if he had the military pilot in mind when he wrote it. Really great review of all the applicable interview topics.

Wonderful!

I have many children books that teach children about the lives of the saints. None of them compare to this one. Amy Steedman beautifully brings the lives of the saints to life through story in a way that makes them unforgettable. I loved this book so much that after reading the Kindle version I bought a hard copy as well.

How Does It Feel to Be a Problem?: Being Young and Arab in America, by Moustafa Bayoumi

An eye-opening look at how young Arab- and Muslim- Americans are forging lives for themselves in a country that often mistakes them for the enemy

Just over a century ago , W.E.B. Du Bois posed a probing question in his classic The Souls of Black Folk: How does it feel to be a problem? Now, Moustafa Bayoumi asks the same about America's new "problem"-Arab- and Muslim-Americans. Bayoumi takes readers into the lives of seven twenty-somethings living in Brooklyn, home to the largest Arab-American population in the United States. He moves beyond stereotypes and clichés to reveal their often unseen struggles, from being subjected to government surveillance to the indignities of workplace discrimination. Through it all, these young men and women persevere through triumphs and setbacks as they help weave the tapestry of a new society that is, at its heart, purely American.

Review
“As Moustafa Bayoumi argues in his provocative investigation, young Arab-Americans are still struggling to define their identities in a hostile environment and to cope with the governments distrust…despite what they have suffered and continue to endure, Bayoumi and his interview subjects still hope that America is a place where they can live in peace—and find justice, fairness, and freedom.”
—Francine Prose, O Magazine

“In How Does It Feel to Be a Problem? Bayoumi…gives twenty-something Arab-Americans the chance to talk about their victories and defeats.”
—The Wall Street Journal

“These are great stories about people who might be your neighbors, and Bayoumi delivers them with urgency, compassion, wryness and hints of poetry. You may walk away from the book with a much greater understanding of Arab-American life, but you'll feel that's simply because you've hung out with Bayoumi and friends, snarfing down Dunkin' Donuts or puffing on hookahs, talking about vital issues.”
—Salon.com

“Bayoumi's book fascinates.”
—Deborah Douglas, Chicago Sun-Times

“Moustafa Bayoumi's How Does It Feel to Be a Problem? has an intimate feel, as the author listens closely to the dreams and realities of seven young Arabs living in post-9/11 America.”
—Dallas Morning News

“an indispensable guide…a well-written book on a subject that is often overlooked or treated as a side note to bigger problems, like the occupation of Iraq, Israeli aggression and civil liberties.”
—The Arab American News

“Bayoumi succeeds in presenting the reader with more than just a glimpse into these lives. One is right there with Rasha, a Palestinian-American teenager, who was detained along with the rest of her family without reason following 9/11. This first story is the most chilling as one can sense the frustration and dread emanating from Rasha’s story. I have heard about things like this happening but to actually read about 19-year-old Rasha and what she and her entire family had to endure is something else. Bayoumi’s decision to talk to Arabs from Brooklyn was a wise one as these stories are reflections from a group of people that not only have bared the brunt of discrimination, but call New York City their home and therefore, 9/11 affected them as it did most New Yorkers. By providing a book accessible to the masses, Bayoumi gives the Arab problem a very human face that other Americans can empathize with.”
—MediaandIslam.com

“Bayoumi offers a revealing portrait of life for people who are often scrutinized but seldom heard from.”
—Booklist(starred review)

“In many ways, [Bayoumi’s] absorbing and affectionate book is a quintessentially American picture of 21st century citizens ‘absorbing and refracting all the ethnicities and histories surrounding [them].’ However, the testimonies from these young adults—summary seizures from their homes, harassment from strangers, being fired for having an Arab or Muslim name—have a weight and a sorrow that is ‘often invisible to the general public.’”
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"The book’s title derives from a question posed by W.E.B. Du Bois in The Souls of Black Folk, and given the burgeoning of anti-Arab, anti-Muslim sentiments since 9/11, the author’s appropriation of it seems apt. [Bayoumi] poignantly portrays young people coming of age at a time when “informants and spies are regular topics of conversation…friendships are tested, trust disappears.””
—Kirkus Reviews

"Wholly intelligent and sensitively-drawn, How Does It Feel to Be a Problem? is an important investigation into the hearts and minds of young Arab-Americans. This significant and eminently readable work breaks through preconceptions and delivers a fresh take on a unique and vital community. Moustafa Bayoumi's voice is refreshingly frank, personable, and true."
—Diana Abu-Jaber, author of Origin, Crescent, and The Language of Baklava

“In relating the gripping personal stories of seven young Arab and Muslim Americans from Brooklyn in How Does it Feel to be a Problem, Moustafa Bayoumi reveals the feelings and frustrations of the current era's scapegoats, who can be demonized, profiled, and reviled without fear of sanction. His book shows both the dimensions of this new problem for American society, and the hopeful signs that this problem too can be overcome.”
—Rashid Khalidi, Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies, Columbia University and author of The Iron Cage

“Suspenseful storytelling and rich detail make How Does It Feel to Be a Problem? required reading for Americans yearning for knowledge about Islam and their Muslim neighbors in the United States. In a series of fascinating narratives about the horrors and conflicts young Muslim-Americans faced after 9/11, Moustafa Bayoumi has written a work that is passionate, yet measured, humorous, and above all enlightening.”
—Geneive Abdo, author of Mecca and Main Street: Muslim Life in America After 9/11

"With deft prose, acute insight and extensive reporting, Moustafa Bayoumi has produced truly engrossing portraits of young Muslim Americans about whom we usually hear only empty polemics. With a light touch, he gives voice to people who are referred to often and heard from rarely. The result is a sense of the tentative resistance of a besieged generation, as well as their determination to force America to be true to its promise even if it means confronting prejudice in its practice."
—Gary Younge, author of Stranger in a Strange Land: Encounters in the Disunited States and No Place Like Home --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Being Young and an Arab-Muslim in America
By Nadeem Muaddi
Moustafa Bayoumi's profile of seven Brooklyn-based Arab-Americans and their diverse experiences living in a post-9-11 America is not only interesting and insightful, but refreshing too. At a time when it seems like everyone but Arab-Americans is being given the opportunity to speak on behalf of the community, Bayoumi goes straight to the source and allows Arab-American youth to explain who they are and what they're experiencing for themselves.

The book's only shortcoming is that it doesn't fully represent the Arab-American community. Though the majority of Arab-Americans are Christian, Bayoumi only shares the story of one. In the preface of his book, Bayoumi states his reasoning: "...Arab-American Muslims are at the eye of today's storms. They are forced to reconcile particular American foreign policies that affect their countries of origin with the idea that their faith poses an existential threat to Western civilization."

Bayoumi's assertion may be correct, but doesn't adequately explain his decision to focus more on Arab-American Muslims than Arab-American Christians.

Arab-American Christians must also reconcile certain American policies (both foreign and domestic) with their love and dedication to both their ancestral homelands and new homeland. They also face the same social and political backlash associated with being an Arab or Muslim in a post-9-11 America.

Arab-American Christians find themselves in an even more precarious position in that they're often forced to serve as a bridge between their Arab-American Muslim brethren and non-Arab/Muslim Americans. In many cases, Arab-American Christians have even taken a leading role in educating non-Arab/Muslim Americans about Islam. While those that do may feel a sense of duty to serve as their brother's keeper, most also recognize that popular misconceptions about Muslims also affect them. After all, few - if any - Arab-American Christians haven't been touched by the racial profiling, discrimination and violence directed towards Muslim-looking people since 9-11. In this sense, Arab-American Christians are direct stakeholders in how non-Arab/Muslim Americans treat Muslims in America.

Bayoumi makes an attempt to address these issues in his story of Sami - an Arab-American Christian who "must navigate the minefield of associations the public has of Arabs as well as the expectations that Muslim Arab Americans have of him as an Arab-American soldier." Sadly, Sami's account is less relatable to Arab-American Christians as are the six other stories of Arab-American Muslims - as he doesn't even self-identify as being an Arab-American.

In Bayoumi's defense, he never asserts that the stories he shares in this book represent all, or even most, Arab-Americans. In fact, he states: "...I make no claims that these seven narratives touch on every detail of Arab-American life." However, his decision to present a more rounded picture of the post 9-11 experience of Arab-American Muslims over that of Arab-American Christians renders his book more useful to readers wanting to understand what it feels like to be young and an Arab-Muslim in America - not what it's like "Being Young and Arab in America."

Highly recommended
By Ziad Rizk
By taking us inside the lives and minds of young Arab Americans living in Brooklyn, a microcosm of the diverse United States, Bayoumi helps us understand what it means to be young and arab in America today. The short stories covering seven different personalities make the narrative very accessible and the book an easy read. The characters themselves are extremely diverse affording the reader a good coverage of different strata of the Arab American society. From a religious young girl in veil fighting against discrimination, to a marine, a patriotic American fighting in Iraq torn between the Arab and American cultures, to a young grocery store worker inspired by the American dream... each story is unique and heart filled.

Insightful, richly told stories
By Yasmin
As someone who has worked almost 10 years with young Arab-Americans, I found this to be a very insightful glimpse into the lives of a little understood community. So many people talk about young Arab-Americans - a population often described as a "homegrown threat" or somehow radical - yet how often do we hear what they think, in their own words?

In this book, Bayoumi is granted unique access into the lives of these young people, allowing him to tell each story colorfully and to share their most innermost feelings. The internal conflicts they experience as Arabs and Americans are instructive, as they reflect the greatest political and cultural challenges facing our world today.
