For the students of art science

This is essentially a scholar book for students of art science: lots of texts, few pictures, and in black and white. It contains a good discussion on the origin of animation, and it tries to specify its specific characteristics. It contains many and very diverse examples, but, of course, they work best as such, when one is able to see the mentioned films. I think this book really helps the reader 'understanding' animation (at least it helps to develop an analytical view towards animation as an art form), but I don't think it is suited for the average animation fan.

A valuable book for animation scholars and researchers

Yes, few pictures. This is not an animation "how-to" or a coffee table book. Instead, this is an extremely valuable book for those interested in animation theory. I would recommend this text more to academics and scholars interested in animation as a form, than those wanting to learn HOW to animate. Although, I do believe it is extremely important understand the theory behind what we do and the history of how others have done it, I would hate for someone to order this book expecting something more tutorial and technical. Wells examines animation as a popular, yet neglected art form and compares the medium to cinematic models and traces the evolution of animation. The text is part history and part theory. He uses examples from multiple animators and studios to support his arguments. The work covers everything from technique to issues in representation. I do not agree with everything he writes in this book, and at times I grow skeptical/confused about his self-invented terminology, but he draws interesting insights to animation and relates them to actual animated texts. I highly recommend this to anyone who is researching animation as an art form or is simply interested in animation history and theory.

On (my) page 353 (of 7361) under the sub-heading 'So whats the answer? Visual education?' the text refers to "eel"animation. This is a huge mistake as the text should read "cell" animation. This mistake is repeated on several of the following pages. PLEASE FIX THIS!!

How to Build Speaker Enclosures 8th edition 1972 144 pages [Paperback] by Alexis Badmaieff
This informative book on speaker building is primarily written to address the enclosures, but has valid information in regard to some Good designs that includes basic speaker information for added clairity for the reader. As given in the description it is a thorough, comprehensive handling of much of the theoretical information of constructing high-quality, top-performance speaker enclosures. This book does cover the advantages and disadvantages of several enclosure types and includes discussions on speaker drivers and crossover networks. After going through the chapters, (8), Speaker Enclosure discussions came first and then the drivers and how they are utilized in the enclosures, driver numbers and the matching of the enclosures. There is a good explanation concerning efficiencies of drivers, balance importance, multiple arrays of speakers and phasing of woofer, midrange and tweeters. Enclosure baffles is discussed in detail in Chapter three comparing three systems for explation of differnt uses. Bass Reflex or Phase Inversin Enclosures, Horn enclosures and the combination of enclosures follow in the next Three Chapters. There follows a thorough discussion of crossovers networks, picking the crossover frequencies, phase shifts, crossover rates, electronic crossovers, network configurations, equalizers and shelving. The final chapter discusses testing and materials of design, regidity, and speaker placement and phasing of stereo speakers is discussed in Summary. This is an older book on the design of Stereo systems, but the theory is still sound and can give a lot of good information to the reader to design and understand building of Speakers. I recommend this book. An easy read compared to those books from some of the newer authorities on the subject.

Do you know an input from an output?

This is a book by professionals for those with an aptitude for science, electronics and mathematics, or for those with some experience in loudspeaker design and construction. From the get-go, the reader is immersed in such audio terms as chokes, wavelength, cone excursion, frequency response, acoustical power, distortion, crossovers, phasing, decibel and equalization. Some explanations are technical involving mathematics. The newcomer will be lost. The beginner would require far more support to actually design, construct and test a loudspeaker system. Block diagrams for setting up testing equipment, and how to use them is beyond the person who doesn't know an input from an output.

Knowledgeable readers, however, will feel at home in a review of the 5 major types of box loudspeakers (1) finite baffle (2) infinite baffle (3) bass reflex (4) horn projectors and (5) combinations of those. There are many construction drawings with measurements of various types of loudspeaker designs and a chapter on woodworking. There are schematics, circuit diagrams and block diagrams. The book is for those who want to know the scientific principles behind loudspeaker enclosures. This will benefit the experienced builder. The authors were highly regarded audio engineers in the 1960's. What is the author's purpose ?

This book is unique. It has no chapters and also entirely different order numbers from the standard edition of the Book of Enoch. It seems the author intended to compose the some of a mystical fable. It is acceptable that this type of books may exist. But I cannot understand what this author makes to express really through the Book of Enoch original. Simply, I was interesting in it than some kinds of other the Book of Enoch. For instance, the book by R.K.Brown, or by J.B. Lumpkin.

Admittedly, R.H.Charles' edition in 1912 is the most important book, of course. Among others of the Book of Enoch, I think D.Olson's book is the particularly finest one.

By the way, a book which relates to Enoch was issued in the end of last year, titled "Fallen Angels and the History of Judaism and Christianity" - The Reception of Enochic Literature - by A.Y.Reed.

About the Author
Steve began Transcendental Meditation in 1974. Impressed by his experiences and the knowledge of spiritual evolution as described by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Steve became a teacher of the TM program in 1976. He attended MIU in Fairfield, Iowa, graduating with a BA in Philosophy in 1981. He met his future wife, Kay, at the university. They were married in 1982. Over the next 24 years Steve and Kay started and ran three different businesses while raising their two sons in New Salem, MA. They currently live in Wellfleet, MA. This is his first novel.

Sharing the Light

This is the story of a young man's successful quest for enlightenment. Through his inner experiences in meditation, and the knowledge imparted to him by his spiritual mentor (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of the Transcendental Meditation program), he awakens to the truth of who he is.

A philosophy student and then a university professor as the story unfolds, Sam O'Connor begins to share the fruit of his enlightenment with his students and with the broader world through a successful popular book. Then a shocking incident - he is shot by a crazed fundamentalist and comes close to death - throws him off his path. Viewed from the outside, what we see is that he withdraws from teaching and the university, and spends the next decade as a semi-recluse, living a quiet life with his wife and sons and growing a garden.

But that is not the whole story. I think the author is showing us a necessary stage on the spiritual path, when early and sometimes "flashy" experiences are quietly assimilated and integrated ever more fully with the reality of life in the world. Thus, Sam O'Connor gains an even greater strength and certainty than he had as a popular and charismatic young professor. When he interacts with young students in the college town (where he still lives), he is discovered to be unusually knowledgeable and inspirational, a kind of local sage. Invited to speak on campus, his lecture on Walt Whitman and the evolution of consciousness - which we get to "listen" to in the penultimate chapter - reveals the depth and beauty of Whitman's vision and at the same time Sam O'Connor's spiritual insight and maturity.

I believe the genre of spiritual fiction - stories of the spiritual quest, like Hermann Hesse's classic Siddhartha - will become more common as more and more people embark on their spiritual journey in the attempt to understand themselves and the world. Knowledgeable and well-written books like this will be there to serve as guides on the path.

And by the way, the tale of how Sam met and married Amy is a fine and tender love story neatly woven into the texture of the book. -- Jack Forem

Engaging

Not being a person who practices transcendental meditation, I quickly began to wonder how the author could engage me. The mechanism Steven Verney used was to put me in the care of characters I began to care about. They took me through a wide open door that opened into considering realms beyond their personalities into the mysteries of thought and possibilities that are there for us all. There were times when this book overwhelmed me, when I noticed myself skimming to find out what would happen to the people. That being said, that was my loss. It's a book that will give you back more than you put in. It's not a book to sell back. It's a book to think about. It's a book to sit with when one is in a mood to savor and go beyond the words. I finished this book, but will be revisiting it.

Delightfully engaging

What a wonderfully full journey into infinity. This is a story about synchronicity, Self mastery, TM, tragedy, and ultimately the fulfillment of love. Verney writes with a wry wit, which often made me laugh out loud at the humanness of us all and feel shock and at how easily tragedy can enter out lives. I loved Verney for both his storytelling, humor and his philosophy, and I envy his delicate and clear explanation of the spiritual path. In his own light and engaging way, he made it clear to me, that we're not human beings on a spiritual journey, but spiritual beings on a human journey.

beautiful, surreal poetry, flawed but still great

okay, so morrison wasn't walt whitman. big deal. all you geniuses who knock him for being such a "pretentious" (a totally relative term)poet are probably turned on to the hip new sound of illustrious modern music geniuses like the backstreet boys or kid rock. well, to put it mildly, you guys can have them, and i for one prefer jim morrison to any the corporate owned commercialized out there today, who use absurd gimmicks and parade around in ridiculous costumes and makeup while openly admitting that all they are interested in is money. and i'm not some old hippie indulging in nostalgia--i'm 18. morrison was a passionate, idealistic, philosophical, intellectual poet who wanted to revolutionize society with the band's music. yes, things did not pan out as most of the artists (including morrison) envisioned it, but this is nonetheless heartfelt, sincere stuff, and it works as lyrics AND poetry, say what you may. i guarantee you that if morrison had lived he would have been an above average, if not legendary, poet, and that he would have made his mark among artists and intellectuals outside of pop culture. "an american prayer" is a touching poem and is the work of a man who had aspirations and ideals that were perhaps too lofty for one human being to carry out or realize at all, with or without the influence he had. he is obviously influenced poetically by the surrealists, the existentialists, and his poetry is more of the modern variety than the classical, as one would expect from such a rebellious, anti authoritarian individual. you can tell from these poems alone, and the poems in "wilderness", that while morrison was no shakespeare, he was an amazingly unique individual who somehow gained free access to his subconscious mind and who frequently employed imagery from it, seemingly whenever he wanted. and the guy who titled his commentary "abject failure as art" doesn't seem to recognize (or doesn't want to)that morrison was not writing from the traditional perspective, and one can probably be safe in assuming that he was of the dada/surrealist/futurist opinion that anything can be art, including life. if ever a man was himself the existential incarnation of his philosophy of life, jim morrison was it. this is a necessity and a must read, as is all the other poetry he wrote.

Some of Jim's poems are exceptionally good, specifically the finished ones. But for the most part it seems they weren't finished, which isn't surprising considering American Night was published by his estate after his death. Who knows what he was planning to do with this material... it was just laying around in a jumble in various notebooks, I presume, and so they decided to sell it. They sold it "as is", straight from his notebooks and journals without any editing.
You might already be familiar with some of the material in this book, such as the chapter called Lyric Verse, which is a rehash of song lyrics. Then there's "Celebration of the Lizard," "American Prayer," "The Hitchhiker," "Paris Journal," and "Notebook Poems." I thought the most interesting section was "Notebook Poems", it was full of ideas about this and that, basically lots of experimentation. But unfortunately a lot of it just seems piled together.
I recommend Jim's self-published poetry book The Lords and New Creatures. It was completed while he was alive, thus it has the feel of a finished project-- something American Night lacks.

Poetry at it's finest

For so long students have been shown and taught about poetry in "medieval" ways by boring, old teachers. Made to write pointless Haiku's or name poems, etc... None of them give a blossoming student, with dreams to someday be a writer, a chance. Few students today can appreciate the artform it truly is, because of the way they're subjected to it, moreless write it. James Douglass Morrison, in this peice and his other poetry he has written, creates that bridge to youth,like myself and others. "The American Night", allows us to "Break on Through, to the other side", to Jim's side.

E. R. Yescombe's Principles of Project Finance, published by Elsevier Academic Press, is an excellent and thorough practical treatment of project finance issues for professionals and others looking for a broad and deep understanding. At 344 pages, this book includes 13 chapters and a detailed glossary of terms.

Clearly this book is by an exceptionally experienced and talented author, who focuses on how to make the project work. Every chapter is a good chapter; I particularly found Chapter 8 interesting with its detailed discussion of project risks, including, e.g. EPC contracting issues (Engineering, Procurement and Construction contracts), commercial viability, completion risks, credit risks, construction cost overruns, delays, relocation of utilities, protesters, project dependencies, environmental risks, operating risks, technology risks, operating cost overruns, maintenance, long-term sales contracts, waste disposal, recourse to sponsor issues, and many more. Yescombe discusses numerous issues and potential situations, and provides suggestions for how to resolve the issue.

In the first section, chapters 1-5, Yescombe provides a detailed discussion of the basics of project finance, with numerous tables and charts. For example,
Chapter 1 is a general introduction to project finance,
Chapter 2 reviews key characteristics of project finance and why it is used
Chapter 3 discusses markets for raising project finance debt
Chapter 4 discusses initiation and structuring of project development and finance for private and public projects
Chapter 5 reviews procedures for obtaining project finance from private lenders

In the second section, chapters 6-7, Yescombe discusses project finance documentation:
Chapter 6 discusses the main Project Agreement, which is often an Offtake Contract or Concession Agreement
Chapter 7 reviews other project contracts, such as construction and operation of the project, raw materials and other inputs, insurance, etc.

In the third section, chapters 8-11, Yescombe reviews project finance risk:
Chapter 8 discusses project risk and mitigation from the viewpoint of lenders
Chapter 9 analyses the effect of macroeconomic risk, such as inflation, interest rates, exchange rates, on project finance, and mitigation efforts
Chapter 10 reviews effects of political risks on projects
Chapter 11 reviews mitigation of political risk, including insurance, guarantees, export credit agencies and development banks, etc.

In the last section, Yescombe discusses the financing structure for projects
Chapter 12 reviews the use of project financial models for investors and lenders
Chapter 13 demonstrates review and risk analysis during negotiation of project finance structure and terms

Yescombe's Principles of Project Finance is a highly useful addition for anyone involved with project management and project finance, and serves as a useful reference.

EXCELLENT BOOK ON PROJECT FINANCE

I think that this is one of the best books ever written on project finance. It can be used as primer for beginners and as a frequent reference for those already familiar with the subject.
I am a corporate financial advisor for chemical company that is continuously invoved in developing new projects utilizing funds procured under the project finance concept.
Although I have read the book in 2003, I find myself repeatedly referring back to it whenever our company needs a project finance loan.
The author's immense experience in project finance has been distilled into the book.
I sincerely believe that all readers will find the book extremely useful. I recommend this book to everyone interested in project finance.
