About the Author
Sheri D. Sheppard, Ph.D., is the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Senior Scholar principally responsible for the Preparations for the Professions Program (PPP) engineering study. She is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1985. Besides teaching both undergraduate and graduate design-related classes at Stanford University, she conducts research on weld fatigue and impact failures, fracture mechanics, and applied finite element analysis.
Dr. Sheppard was recently named co-principal investigator on a NSF grant to form the Center for the Advancement of Engineering Education (CAEE), along with faculty at the University of Washington, Colorado School of Mines, and Howard University. She was co-principal investigator with Professor Larry Leifer on a multi-university NSF grant that was critically looking at engineering undergraduate curriculum (Synthesis). In 1999, Sheri was named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering(ASME) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Recently Sheri was awarded the 20 04 ASEE Chester F. Carlson Award in recognition of distinguished accomplishments in engineering education. Before coming to Stanford University, she held several positions in the automotive industry, including senior research engineering at Ford Motor Company's Scientific Research Lab. She also worked as a design consultant, providing companies with structural analysis expertise.
Benson H. Tongue, Ph.D. is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at University of California-Berkeley. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in1988, and Currently teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in dynamics vibrations, and control theory. His research concentrates on the modeling and analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems and the control of both structural and acoustic systems. This work involves experimental, theoretical, and numerical analysis and has been directed toward helicopters, computer disk drives, robotic manipulators, and general structural systems. Most recently, he has been involved in a multidisciplinary stud of automated highways and has directed research aimed at understanding the nonlinear behavior of vehicles traveling in platoons and in devising controllers that optimize the platoon's behavior in the face of non-nominal operating conditions. His most recent research has involved in the active control of loudspeakers and biomechanical analysis of human fall dynamics.
Dr. Tongue is the author of Principles of Vibration, a senior/first-year graduate-level textbook. He has served as Associate Technical Editor of the ASME Journal of Vibration and Acoustics and is currently a member of the ASME Committee on Dynamics of Structures and Systems. He is the recipient of the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award, the Sigma Xi Junior Faculty award, and the Pi Tau Sigma Excellence in Teaching award. He serves as a reviewer for numerous journals and funding agencies and is the author of more than sixty publications.

Excellent Text

I am concluding a course in vibrations (UofWashington) and wanted to take a moment to recognize the author for the excellent text he has crafted. I have found many times through the quarter that simply sitting down and diving through its chapters taught me more than my professor ever could have.

Specifically:
-Excellent examples
-Excellent derivations
-Unique and effective approach to emphasizing fundamental points

But mainly this text excels because it never forgets the main point - to help newcomers understand the topic of vibrations. Highly recommended, even if you don't specifically need a text on vibrations. I think everyone could use a little more of chapters three,four,six and eight (if you're curious, buy the book!) :)

Good introductory text

I used this book in Prof. Tongue's own vibrations class some years ago, and occasionally refer to it today. It reflects his unique lecture style: mathematically thorough and rigorous, yet engaging, patient (no student left behind), and often witty. The math can be difficult for engineers, but Tongue walks you through it so that it's clear. If you have to teach yourself vibrations and don't have the benefit of a teacher, this would be a good book.

This approach does have drawbacks. The expositions are lengthy. Key derivations can run for many pages, as Tongue explains all of the nuances, implications and pitfalls. This makes it difficult to use as a reference, although there is an appendix that just lists the key formulas. Systems with multiple degrees of freedom are not covered in as much detail as those with one, and even then there's a focus specifically on systems with two. If you're already passingly familiar with the subject, you're best served by a classic text such as Meirovitch.

Best vibrations book ever

Ok, its been 10 years since I completed my undergrad, so I barely remember the equations of motion. Sudenly I see myself in this new job where dynamics is everything they do. I got myself all kinds of books to help me refresh my memory but they were all over my head. This book however is down to earth. It is easy to read, almost if the professor was right there explaining everything to you in a very informal manner. I loved it! That is what I needed. I recomend to anyone new in vibrations or trying to get a good foundation.

Grade 5-9?Combining her own and friends' reminiscences with current research, Jukes discusses a wide variety of subjects from buying a bra to sexual harassment and abuse. In a warm, conversational style, she covers body changes in both boys and girls, menstruation, general health, drinking and drugs, sexual feelings, pregnancy, contraceptives, and sexually transmitted diseases including AIDS. The text is sometimes humorous, but always conveys caring, respect, and concern. Illustrations consist of only a few small cartoons. Several styles of type are used to vary the look of the pages. The list for further reading offers good suggestions. Written for the same audience as Karen and Jennifer Gravelle's The Period Book (Walker, 1996), Jukes's book shares the same scope of coverage as Lynda Madaras's What's Happening to My Body? A fantastic, informative and reassuring books for pre-teens

Looking back now as a freshman in high school, I realize that I absolutely LOVED this book was I was some around the age of a 5th or 6th grader. I would lie in bed at night, reading it behind the covers with the lights turned down low, taking in every word Jukes had to say. Now why, you may ask, would a girl want to read this book so many times over? The answer: I was immensely curious about all these subjects, and Juke's anecdotes and person stories made the book particularly engaging! Her stories range from a falsies popping out in the swimming pool disaster to the day she got her first period. She covers topics ranging from pubic hair, to fitting a bra, to what to do if you get your period at school.
The only real weakness of this book is the fact that it doesn't have any diagrams, such as what a uterus looks like etc., which I find important in getting a good understanding of exactly what everything looks like. However, this in an excellent book, and I recommend it to all preteen girls curious about puberty, and all mother's with girls reaching their preteens.
I do have to warn you about one thing though, this book also covers topics such as "Know the Facts: Drinking Smoking, and Doing Drugs, Sex and Pregnancy, Condoms, and Unplanned Pregnancy." which could be slightly heavy topics for a 4th, 5th or even immature 6th grader. If you would rather you child learn just the basics, the first four chapters of this book (Beasts and Bras, Introducing...Your Period!, Your Period-How to Handle It, and "General Health-Checkups, Counseling, and Crisis Hotlines") are offered in a separate book, called "Growing Up It's a Girl Thing : Straight Talk About First Bras, First Periods, and Your Changing Body".
This is a fantastic book though, and I would definitely recommend it to any girls wishing to learn more about their pre-puberty bodies or their parents.

Reassuring, helpful: What many preteen girls need to hear.

If you give your pre-teen daughter one book this year, give her this one. This is the wise older friend, the "aunt" so many of us wished for. In a gentle, friendly, unassuming way, Mavis Jukes tells girls about their maturing bodies and the issues they'll face as they grow up. Jukes tells it like it is, from the trivial-but-important (e.g. how to get that first bra) to the vitally important (sexual assault, harassment, HIV, peer pressure and dangerous choices).

Jukes never talks down or belittles the seriousness of adolescent feelings. At the same time, she never soft-pedals the consequences of making adult choices when you're still a child: "You're a kid: breasts, new body hair and having a period doesn't change that."

Reassuring, well-written and engaging, *It's A Girl Thing* packs a lot of information into a very readable package. Share this book with a girl you love.

It's A Girl Thing...How to stay healthy,safe, and in charge

This book came at a time of necessity for my daughter whose body is now changing. It is all put in a way as girlfriend-to-girlfriend advice and very helpful for the young. Jukes gives life experience moments, which make the acceptance part of puberty easier. I love the humor and of course that opens you up to talk about your experiences with your daughter. I think it should be included with the fourth and fifth grade school supplies. No surprises! Buy it, you'll be glad you did!

A must-read timeless classic.

A classic text, and a must read for any psychologist or psychotherapist, regardless of his/her theoretical persuasion. Anna Freud's book was the first attempt at organizing the different ways in which individuals try to cope with their internal drives and affects, with the people in their lives, and the external reality in general. This book had a tremendous influence in the mental health field from its publication, launching the field of ego psychology, and stimulating both theoretical and empirical work, which still resonates today. Though I was nurtured in a different school of thought in psychotherapy, I am able to appreciate the lucid writing of Anna Freud, who made every effort to make more accessible some of his father's concepts, and still leave her mark in the field. Contemporary psychoanalysis is still marching at the beat of Object Relations Theory, but the contribution of Anna Freud and Ego Psychology continues to be valuable when working with less compromised personality structures.

Now in its second edition, "A Short History of English Literature" is a very accessible piece that is perfect for those readers who did not major in literature, but want to get their feet wet. Robert Barnard does an excellent job of taking the reader on a walk through the history of literature giving helpful historical information along the way. He touches on biographical information, analyses of individual works, and helpful comparisons and contrasts between works of different authors. Also, when necessary, information about historical (i.e. cultural and political) context is given without falling into messy swamps of detail.
The reason I have given it four starts instead of five is that it lacks student friendly organization. In other words, helpful devices such as outlines, subheadings, chapter summaries, and lists of key points, are absent. The book is good, but more attention to organization would make it great.
Barnard's book is an easy-to-read introduction that can be read as you sit in your favorite armchair, sipping a cup of coffee. I have truly enjoyed it.
