innovative knowledge fo General Aviation Aircraft Owners

After 50 years as an general aviation aviator, and 40 of those as a general aviation aircraft owner, the information in this book breaks ground in my understanding of aircraft maintenance decision-making. Since I've never skimped, my maintenance costs haven't been frugal -- and the minimalist maintenance revolution is novel to me. All in this book appears to offer marvelous reductions in maintenance costs in my aircraft operations. So well done.

I can't wait to read the next installments.

A worthwhile purchase

If you're familiar with Mike Busch's webinars, you know what's in this book. There isn't a lot of new material, but it's nice to have it written down in one place and I for one feel we should support Mike by buying his book. He is a voice for reason and sanity in GA maintenance, one that is badly needed.

A Compelling Manifesto for Change in General Aviation Maintenance

Mike Busch’s book Manifesto offers compelling evidence, impeccable logic, and an elegant exposition that point to the need for meaningful change in the dreary and hideously expensive way in which we manage airplane maintenance in private aviation. He shows with hard statistics that time-based maintenance is often dangerous. New and rebuilt engines fail at a greater rate than do older engines. Problems arise most frequently after maintenance, not before.

The book is indeed a manifesto in the best sense of the word. He advocates Owner-in-Command aircraft maintenance in parallel with the absolute authority enjoyed by Pilots-in-Command. A large fraction of light-airplane maintenance occurs in response to manufacturer set time limits, not in response to evidence of need. Both manufacturers and airplane repair shops are slaves to the potential liabilities perceived by ambulance chasers dancing in the wake of accidents. Mike proposes an ingenious solution to the problem: Let Owners-in-Command accept the responsibility and liability for maintenance of their airplanes exactly as they accept the responsibility as Pilot-in-Command for the safety of their passengers and airplanes in flight.

If you own an airplane, buy a copy for yourself and one for your mechanic. Manifesto may well provide airplane owners the motivation and resolve to become Owners-in-Command.

Jon M. Duff received his Ph.D. in art education from The Ohio State University after undergraduate and graduate study in technology at Purdue University. Professor Duff currently teaches a variety of courses at Arizona State University, including modeling, animation, illustration, and technical publishing. He is the author of over 70 technical papers and 17 texts on industrial graphics and has served as a consultant to education, industry, and government for over 30 years

A Classic

As computer-based modelling takes over this function, the fundamentals are in danger of being forgotten. This is a classic and remarkably thorough text on the subject. As someone who reads graphics as part of construction and prototype projects, I've found the book essential to understanding not only the views of parts, but how to see them in their three-dimensional functional aspect. If you ever have to make parts from scratch -- know what they do and how they fit -- this is the book to have on your reference shelf. It is also the basic source for design and even sketching techniques essential to making yourself understood in quick studies and discussions with others. Note, earlier editions are equally relevant.

The use of digital signal processing is ubiquitous in the field of physiology and biomedical engineering. The application of such mathematical and computational tools requires a formal or explicit understanding of physiology. Formal models and analytical techniques are interlinked in physiology as in any other field. This book takes a unitary approach to physiological systems, beginning with signal measurement and acquisition, followed by signal processing, linear systems modelling, and computer simulations. The signal processing techniques range across filtering, spectral analysis and wavelet analysis. Emphasis is placed on fundamental understanding of the concepts as well as solving numerical problems. Graphs and analogies are used extensively to supplement the mathematics. Detailed models of nerve and muscle at the cellular and systemic levels provide examples for the mathematical methods and computer simulations. Several of the models are sufficiently sophisticated to be of value in understanding real world issues like neuromuscular disease.

This second edition features expanded problem sets and a link to extra downloadable material.

The book is composed of the topics on Signal Measurement, Signals and Systems Basics, Signal Filtering and System Control, Digitization and Discrete Systems, Discrete Signal Processing, Numerical Methods and Geometry for Graphics, Nerve Action Potentials Nerve Action Potentials, External Stimulation of Excitable Tissue, Skeletal Muscle Contraction, The Electromyogram, Neuromuscular Control, Neural Firing Rate Analysis, Immune Response to Infection, and Linear Model of Blood Flow.

This second edition is a substantially revised version of the first edition published by Springer in 2000 especially in introducing virtual physiology experiments that is of great help to students and at the same time decreasing the need to use experiments with animals for teaching the course.

Best known for The Serpent Power, the book which introduced 'Kundalini Yoga' to the western world, Avalon turned the image of Tantra around, from that of a despised magical and orgiastic cult into a refined philosophy which greatly enhanced the prestige of Hindu thought to later generations of westerners.

This biographical study is in two parts. The first focuses on Woodroffe's social identity in Calcutta against the background of colonialism and nationalism - the context in which he 'was' Arthur Avalon. To a very unusual degree for someone with a high position under the empire, Woodroffe the British High Court Judge absorbed the world of the Bengali intellectuals of his time, among whom his popularity was widely attested. His admirers were attracted by his Indian nationalism, to which his tantric studies and supposed learning formed an important adjunct.

Woodroffe's friend Ghose, however, was the chief source of the textual knowledge in which the 'orientalist' scholar appeared to be deeply versed. The second part of this study assesses Woodroffe's own relationship to Sanskrit and to the texts, and highlights his very extensive but gifted use of secondary sources and the knowledge of Ghose and other Indian people. It examines the apologetic themes by which he and his collaborators made Tantra first acceptable, then fashionable.

Partly because of his mysterious pseudonym, Woodroffe acquired a near legendary status for a time, and remains a fascinating figure. This book is written in a style that should appeal to the general reader as well as to students of Indian religions and early twentieth century Indian history, while being relevant to the ongoing debate about 'orientalism'.

Detective work with many insights

Many academic studies, expecially in book length form, are difficult for the general reader to absorb because academic studies are sometimes excruciatingly specific and exact. Whereas the scholar has to quote Sir John Woodroffe (1865- 1936) and explain the context , most readers are content with a paraphrase or a general description. This work has over a thousand footnotes, which in academic circles is sometimes required, but with the addition of Sanskrit terms and Tantric references, this erudition may lose the general reader.

If the reader does not already know, Arthur Avalon was the pen name of Sir John Woodroffe and the author studies them separately as if they were two different people. This impressive research looks at Sir John Woodroffe in the context of his standing in British colonial society and with the Bengali intellectuals. The real authority behind Arthur Avalon's The Serpent Power and other works was Atal Bihari Ghose who was well versed in Sanskrit (whereas Arthur Avalon was not). Their working relationship is one of the highlights. The importance of Arthur Avalon, of course, is that he saved Tantra for India and for the world. The precise academic style of writing is not for everyone.

1915 Lectures Given By Dr. Maria Montessori Decrying Child Neglect

Two lectures given by Dr. Maria Montessori during 1915, and transcribed. The first one is The Mother and the Child, and I was disappointed that its focus seemed to dismiss the efforts that some mythical mothers bygone made in their misguided efforts to raise healthy children according to the beliefs at the time. I was hoping it would offer some guidance to mothers, but is mostly dismissive. The second lecture had some interesting tidbits, but was again, a speech decrying the socially acceptable child neglect that she was a passionate advocate against. I wish I hadn't bothered with this slim volume reprinted from UC Berkley's collection, but at least now I know.

Dragons--fiction or fact?

Some time back a library student asked me for a book about dragons. As our library did not have any, I found one with illustrations by a prominent children's artist. However, when it came in, I was aghast. Too much sexual reference for upper elementary students! While I don't practice censorship, I do try to exhibit good sense.

So imagine my delight when our book fair company brought this book in for our last fair. "Dragons: Fearsome Monsters for Myth and Fiction" is exactly what I was seeking for this boy. He was thrilled with the book.

There are several reasons why this is a good dragon book:
1. The reading level is appropriate for the 9-12 age grouping.
2. Each two-page spread of each dragon contains
*a full-page illustration,
*a comparative illustration with man to show size,
*a map of country of origin and story,
*an illustration depicting one scene of the dragon in action, and
*a list of factoids.

The introduction points out that dragons may be entirely mythical based on mistaken identity (discovery of dinosaur bones could have led to speculation about dragons). However, there have been credible witnesses to dragons: Marco Polo during his travels and Leonardo da Vinci drew them.

Whatever the case--myth, fiction, or reality--the dragons in this book have captured the imagination. Some of the dragons included are Beowulf's dragon, Krak of Poland (Krakow is named after him), the dragon from the St. George story, the story of Maud and the Wyvern in England, Fafnir of Scandinavian fame immortalized in Wagner's opera "Siegfried," both Glaurung and Smaug of Lord of the Rings.

Also included are dragons from Pakistan, China, Russia, Japan, Canary Islands, Libya, as well as fictional stories.

Even though Amazon lists several other dragon books, I cannot speak for them. I can speak for this book. It is appropriate, interesting, informative, and entertaining. The only reason I am deducting one star is that it is out of print. And I don't know why. It doesn't make sense.

It's a good book with lots of great artwork and includes awesome action pictures and facts about different dragons from ancient legends, myths, and media dragons. It has many dragons (20 in count) all with information boxes and Did you know facts. It has dragons like the Hungarian Horntail, the Wyvern, and Jawzahr.
