In 1988, Xinran (ne Xue Hue) was selected to work in state media and ended up at the Nanjing radio station, where she began broadcasting "Words on the Night Breeze" a year later. The show featured letters and calls from ordinary women discussing their problems, and was hugely successful and revelatory, as women had few avenues, public or private, for talking about their lives, which were frequently grim and often harrowing. Xinran quit the show in 1995 to try to help her listeners directly, but by 1997 she had burned out. She persuaded the radio station authorities to let her travel to England, where she began teaching Chinese, met and married English book agent Toby Eady and wrote this memoir of her experiences on the program, including a compendium of some of the most painful of the "Night Breeze" stories. She presents narratives from women who live "in emotionless political marriages" and those, the majority, who struggle "amid poverty and hardship." They have commonly experienced sexual abuse: rape, frequently gang rape. Apparently designed to bring the women's horrific stories to light, the book doesn't do enough to situate them clearly in the context of the show as a state-produced product, or within Xinran's own difficulties in processing and presenting the material on the air (or in this book). The results will leave readers sympathetic to the grave enormity of the women's circumstances, but-due perhaps to minor translation problems and Xinran's lingering political worries-somewhat confused about how Xinran tried to deal with their plights.

In 1989, Xinran, a Beijing journalist, began broadcasting a nightly program on state radio that was devoted entirely to personal affairs—a radical concept in Communist China. In response, she received thousands of letters from women, many with questions about sexuality; one woman wondered "why her heart beat faster when she accidentally bumped into a man on the bus." Eventually, Xinran persuaded her superiors to let her share some of these letters on the air, and in this groundbreaking book, written after she moved to London, in 1997, she has also included stories that didn't make it past government censors. A teen-ager commits suicide after learning that a neighbor has seen her boyfriend kiss her forehead; a university student speaks casually of becoming a "personal secretary," or mistress, to a rich man; a Kuomintang general's daughter goes mad after witnessing the torture of the family that sheltered her. This intimate record reads like an act of defiance, and the unvarnished prose allows each story to stand as testimony.

Interesting and disturbing reading!

The writer is excellent. The first story is so interesting that I could not stop reading it . Was very disturbing and I found myself asking could this be true? Sometimes story's are played upon to make them more interesting. But still there is truth to the story I can feel it .And when I consider were these stories come from (China) I'm inclined to believe that they are true. As you can see this Chinese woman writer, Xinran , gets one to thinking! So nice to read and hear about women from other countries makes me feel closer to women in general all over the world suffering from such stupid indignities imposed upon them by society. To sum it all up I'd say this book is interesting reading. I recommend it highly.

Heartbreaking but hopeful...

What an amazing account of such a diverse group of Chinese women including both cultural norms and historical context. I was captivated by the author's compassion and honesty as she discussed patriarchy, homophobia, prison life, natural disasters, death, aging, sexual terrorism, domestic violence, politics, and so much more. Although not written for the faint of heart, this work is a labor of love and an exceptional account of the multiple realities of women's' lives in China.

Amazing journalism

I assigned this book for my Community College students in my Reading classes for several semesters. It gave me a look at customs so different from our own, and many of the vignettes were absolutely heart breaking. It is a must-read. Pick it up, read it, and share it with everyone you know. Help them to understand the plight of women in China.

About the Author

Karen Morgaine, PhD, is a queer, white, academic with a penchant for critical theory and anarchist/Buddhist/feminist/post-colonial perspectives. After working in the domestic violence and community mental health fields for ten years, she completed her PhD in social work and social research at Portland State University. She fortuitously landed in a sociology department at California State University, Northridge, where she is able to teach a variety of courses related to social welfare and social justice including courses in community organizing, social movements, and LGBTQQI communities. Her research leans towards analysis of social movement framing and issues related to power and privilege within social movements and identity groups. When not in the classroom or in front of the computer, she can be found dining all around Los Angeles, biking/doing yoga/lifting weights, and laughing a lot with her partner.

Moshoula Capous-Desyllas, PhD, MSW, is an assistant professor in the sociology department at California State University, Northridge. She teaches social work courses in anti-oppressive practice, diversity and social justice, human behavior in the social environment, and social work methods. Her interests include arts-based research methods, community-based participatory action research, community organizing and advocacy, social work with immigrants, trans-global migration issues, commercial sex work, and intersecting oppressions. She is committed to facilitating community dialogue and a deeper understanding about issues of diversity and social justice through art. Her passion lies in highlighting the voices of marginalized communities through the use of art as a form of activism, empowerment and social change. When school isn’t in session, she can be found kayaking in the Sea of Cortez or the Agean Sea, or lost in the global South with a backpack in tow.

My congratulations to these authors for their accomplishment in bringing anti-oppressive theory and practice as the organizing theme for a mainstream textbook in the United States. Faculty and students will benefit enormously from reading this book and developing a familiarity with the progressive concepts. This pioneering book does a tremendous job in moving anti-oppressive concepts forward and helping to radicalize social work.

Object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD) has over the years, become a vast field, encompassing such diverse topics as design process and principles, documentation tools, refactoring, and design and architectural patterns. For most students the learning experience is incomplete without implementation. This new textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to OOAD. The salient points of its coverage are: • A sound footing on object-oriented concepts such as classes, objects, interfaces, inheritance, polymorphism, dynamic linking, etc. • A good introduction to the stage of requirements analysis. • Use of UML to document user requirements and design. • An extensive treatment of the design process. • Coverage of implementation issues. • Appropriate use of design and architectural patterns. • Introduction to the art and craft of refactoring. • Pointers to resources that further the reader’s knowledge. All the main case-studies used for this book have been implemented by the authors using Java. The text is liberally peppered with snippets of code, which are short and fairly self-explanatory and easy to read. Familiarity with a Java-like syntax and a broad understanding of the structure of Java would be helpful in using the book to its full potential. Brahma Dathan is an associate professor in the Department of Information and Computer Sciences at Metropolitan State University, Minnesota. He obtained his BS in engineering with special focus on electronics and communication from the University of Kerala, MTech in computer science from IIT Madras and PhD in computer science from University of Pittsburgh. Sarnath Ramnath received his BTech and MTech degrees from IIT Delhi in 1984 and 1987 respectively, and his PhD in Computer Science from SUNY, Buffalo, in 1994. His areas of interest include algorithm analysis and design, data-structures, computational geometry and object-oriented software design. He is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science at Minnesota State University, St Cloud, MN, USA.

Well worth the money.

I purchased this book because I heard there would be a few new spells for my druid, it turned out there were a lot more than a few. If you play a Druid in Castles and Crusades then this book will be great for you. There are new spells for Druids, Clerics, and Illusionist. There are also two new classes, the Woodwose (Wildmen) and the Wolf Charmer (which I really want to use if I ever have to reroll a character. They can control were-wolves... that's just awesome). Overall this book opens a lot of new ideas to players who have already discovered Castles and Crusades and I loved it.

There are a few bad things, Many of the reviews I found online complained that they didn't have new races for your player characters in this book, that is not true. They do include new races, they're just not presented in a manner that is easy for you to understand when creating a new character. When I showed it to a new member of our party they didn't want to take the time or energy to figure out how the new races worked, and just went back to the old ones. Also there's some recycled art.

Overall I did love this book though, and was glad I purchased it.
