The functionalist viewpoint of such research basically says that a medium is best defined by how people use it. Having looked at some of the audience research that comes from sources other than the standard ratings companies, the book then goes on to demonstrate new ways that formats, production procedures, and announcing styles can meet audience needs and desires. Although the volume concludes with several original methods for selecting and presenting airplay music based on the audience's moods and emotional needs, it does not insist upon a singular, formulaic approach for constructing or modifying a music format. Instead, it attempts to involve the reader in thinking through the process of format development.

Two audio tapes are also available for use with the book. The tapes contain nearly 3 hours of important, detailed information and provocative points from the book. Exclusive audio examples include:

* hi-fi versus lo-fi listening environments;
* subjective perception of the announcer's distance from the listener;
* audio editing rates;

No apparent improvement in the second edition

I read the first edition very carefully, and found many cases of sloppy editing, inconsistencies in what they said about the Precision system, and a distinct lack of clarity in presentation of some of the various bidding sequences. I have a copy of the new, second edition, and had high hopes that it would be improved by offering new material about the latest developments in the way the top players play Precision, and was hoping that the many problems of the first edition would be corrected. It appears all of those hopes were in vain. It's somewhat excusable to print one edition with such problems. But to issue a second edition that not only doesn't provide anything new, but also doesn't correct the problems of the earlier edition is, in my opinion, irresponsible. The book still has a lot of good material in it, which is why I was willing to give it two stars, instead of only one.

Best Precison Book

Don't listen to this other knuckle head who wrote the negative review. This is an excellent presentation of the subject and the best Precision Book available. The book is well laid out for learning the system. It appears that all the experts play the precision bidding system. There are a number of different Precision systems. This appears to take the best from all systems. From the beginnings to weak notrumps to the odds and ends this book has it all. I highly recommend the book. Look at the Amazon reviews of their first edition and you will see they all think the book is a great Precision Book. This is the revised edition and they have made improvements to the system in this book. It is the best Precision book available at this time. I have played Precision for the past 5 years and think it is the best system available. This book gives you a lot of options so you can take your choice as to what system you wish to play. I just order Precision Simplified and I have heard it is a good book. I have 250 bridge books and this is one of my favorites on a bidding system.

I read both the first and second editions of Precision Today. If you have the first one, don't bother buying the second one. They are virtually identical. There are a couple of chapters that I disagree with (opening 2NT showing 5-5 in the minors) or is Mid-Chart (opening 2 of a suit to show a strong 4-4-4-1 hand) which is not allowed in most ACBL sanctioned games. However, if you are interested in learning precision, this is a good book to get.

Kelly's memoir begins with the often humorous events of his early life as a cowboy on New Mexican ranches, regaling the reader with tales of his later prep school and college days at Harvard, and events during his tours of duty in World War II and the Korean conflict. The book moves on to relate stories of his marriage to Jeanne Wise and their family life in Santa Fe, and of his involvement in Santa Fe civic organizations and educational institutions. Kelly movingly chronicles the difficult loss of Jeanne in 1993 and goes on to tell of his subsequent adventures traveling in Europe and Asia and his activities back home in New Mexico, working on his beloved ranch in the Pecos. The Buffalo Tail is not only the story of one man's adventurous and fulfilling life; the book also recounts a piece of the civic and commercial history of the New Mexican West.
