War Begins

While The Walking Dead continues to impress, this particular volume, while keeping with the tone of the rest of the volumes, doesn't necessarily bring anything new or surprising to the table. War has started with Negan, who is a different sort of twisted compared to the Governor, but not so much different that he feels anywhere near as compelling or reviled, despite the fact that he is, in some ways, even more diabolical. There just isn't as much to make this issue emotionally compelling from my perspective, though I suspect that part two of All Out War may have more of a long term impact.
I suppose part of it is the fact that Rick and his close nit friends and family have already been pretty much torn to shreds by all the things they have faced in the past. Despite this being the 'biggest' battle they have faced thus far, it seems more routine given everything that has befallen Rick, Carl, Michonne, and Andrea in the past. Hopefully, part two will provide something new and exciting to latch on to going forward.

brutal and very realistic to what it would be like trying to survive in a world like that

I started reading the comics after I learned the TV series was based on the comics series. While there are some similarities, the TV series is very different from the comics. This is definitely an adult comics series. It is very graphic, brutal and very realistic to what it would be like trying to survive in a world like that. There's a lot of profanity; which gets on my nerves, but sadly so many ppl feel the need to talk like that; however; the plot keeps me interested and I look past it. Many of our loved ones and friends just wouldn't make it and the comic series realistically reveals this. Not sure if I will look at the TV series the same; but at the same time I would not watch the TV series if it were just like the comics.Why would I buy the comic series if it were the same as the TV series. I am anxiously awaiting the Walking Dead Volume 21: All Out War Part 2 and the other volumes to follow.

Life After the Zombie Apocalypse is Nasty, Brutish, and Short

I’ll start this review the same way I started my review of Volume 19—WOW. After a weak stretch post-prison, The Walking Dead is firmly back on track with the Alexandria Safe-Zone/Negan storyline. The battle lines have been set and, as the title suggests, an all-out war starts between Negan’s faction and the Alexandria Safe-Zone and its allies. Don’t let the Part 1 stop you (although at this point Part 2 has been out for a while): Vol. 20 ends on one hell of a climax AND cliffhanger (too often we get the latter without the former).

The text is in the Revised Standard Version (RSV), and outlines each chapter in a paragraph-by-paragraph interpretation. Exposition of the text is developed within this framework. Intentionally avoiding theological extremes, the commentary keeps Christ-centered faith and the reality of personal redemption as well as the demand for an authentic expression of faith in terms of a Christ-controlled life.

Full of information

This series of books, to me, is still the 'gold standard" for Bible commentaries. One can skim or go as deeply into facts and theories about the Scriptures as one chooses. The only thing that could be better is to have the series as originally written rather than the edited and re-written one such as this.

I knew there were two different types of book listed of Volume 1 and Volume 1-Revised. I had several questions about it and he took the time to answer all my questions. Thank you so much.

About the Author
Denny M. Burdine has 30 years of football coaching experience at the high school level. Before retiring, he spent the last 17 years of his coaching career at Arkansas High School in Texarkana, Arkansas, where he served as a defensive coordinator, head football coach, athletic director, and history teacher. His love for defensive football helped to establish him as one of the best defensive coaches in the state of Arkansas, with his defensive teams being ranked as one of the best in the state year in and year out. Some of his players have gone on to play at the Division I level, as well as in the NFL. During his career, he coached three NFL football players: Rod Smith of the Denver Broncos, Eric Warfield of the Kansas City Chiefs, and Mike Cherry of the New York Giants.

This is a good resource to have if you are coaching football, and you want to know how to improve defensive performance. The diagrams are clear, and they explain each fronts purpose. The CDROM brings the diagrams to life.

Discworld fans need this atlas!

This is a beautifully done atlas of the Discworld. And it includes a huge map! with insets describing things like thaumaturgical fields...

The presentation is wonderful: a hardcover book in a jacket that includes an elastic to hold it together, and which keeps the separate HUGE map in place so it does not slip out.

It's a delight to read, too, whether straight through or at random. All of the separate areas have their own small maps in the text, too, which is fun. (I love maps!)

I think all Discworld fans would love this, and I recommend it highly! Beautiful and useful!

About the Author
Neil Matthew has been interested in and has programmed computers since 1974. A mathematics graduate from the University of Nottingham, Neil is just plain keen on programming languages and likes to explore new ways of solving computing problems. He's written systems to program in BCPL, FP (Functional Programming), Lisp, Prolog, and a structured BASIC. He even wrote a 6502 microprocessor emulator to run BBC microcomputer programs on UNIX systems. In terms of UNIX experience, Neil has used almost every flavor since the late 1970s, including BSD UNIX, AT&T System V, Sun Solaris, IBM AIX, many others, and of course Linux. He can claim to have been using Linux since August 1993 when he acquired a floppy disk distribution of Soft Landing (SLS) from Canada, with kernel version 0.99.11. He's used Linux-based computers for hacking C, C++, Icon, Prolog, Tcl, and Java at home and at work. All of Neil's "home" projects are developed using Linux. He says Linux is much easier because it supports quite a lot of features from other systems, so that both BSD- and System V-targeted programs will generally compile with little or no change. Neil is currently working as an Enterprise Architect specializing in IT strategy at Celesio AG. He has a background in technical consultancy, software development techniques, and quality assurance. Neil has also programmed in C and C++ for real-time embedded systems.

Rick Stones started programming at school (more years ago than he cares to remember) on a 6502-powered BBC micro, which, with the help of a few spare parts, continued to function for the next 15 years. He graduated from Nottingham University with a degree in Electronic Engineering, but decided software was more fun. Over the years he has worked for a variety of companies, from the very small with just a dozen employees, to the very large, including the IT services giant EDS. Along the way he has worked on a range of projects, from real-time communications to accounting systems, to very large help desk systems. He is currently working as an IT architect, acting as a technical authority on various major projects for a large pan-European company. A bit of a programming linguist, he has programmed in various assemblers, a rather neat proprietary telecommunications language called SL-1, some FORTRAN, Pascal, Perl, SQL, and smidgeons of Python and C++, as well as C. (Under duress he even admits that he was once reasonably proficient in Visual Basic, but tries not to advertise this aberration.)

Excellent book for beginners

I was just beginning in Linux programming when I bought this book. It was fantastic. The authors provide clear yet concise explanations of basic Linux system calls and library functions, as well as tons of background information concerning the inner workings of Linux and basic knowledge that one coming from a Microsoft background may not have considered. The book is very well-written and is easy to follow, with some humor along the way. All of my questions of the specific subject material seemed to be answered very soon after they popped in my head.

One word of caution, though. I was proficient in C# on Microsoft platforms prior to starting this book, so it was quite a shock going to pure C in Linux. I would strongly recommend a basic knowledge of C and how it differs from C++ and C# beforehand. Be sure to have a thorough understanding of pointers, pointers to arrays, pointers to multi-dimensional arrays, and anything else concerning pointers. The authors seem to expect it.

All in all, though, I give it an A+!

I own a lot of IT books. This is by far the best book I have ever bought. This book doesn't teach you C or C++, but it does show you how to get started programming in a Linux Environment.

I like to learn by deconstructing simple examples. I have some "headfirst" books, but they are a little too nuts for me. Maybe that series attempts to teach artists or left brained people how to think like programmers. Perhaps the 1 star reviewers should have gotten one of those instead.

If your analytical and right brained, and if you like to learn by doing, look no further.

Ignore all the 1 star or negative reviews, 70 (5 star) reviews cant be wrong. You need to pickup a good C or C++ programming book as a companion to this, such as C++ primer plus.

This book is responsible for taking my career to the next level. Since this book I have moved on to other classics such as "linkers and loaders" and the art of GDB Debugging among many others.

Believe me, if you want to get started programming in Linux, you need to start here.

Finally, I would like to thank the authors for this book because they literally hold nothing back. They give it to you straight and provide concrete code examples on which you can build your understanding through hard work and experimentation.

Excellent coverage of all bases

This book is an excellent place to start with programming in the Linux environment. Its a good overview of all bases in the Linux environment, it takes every major topic in Linux programming and gives the reader a good foundation and gives enough information to help the reader know where to go from there. If you are new to Linux programming and not sure where to start, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU.
