A lovely read, but I want more, of everything.

As far as fantasy goes, this was not a bad story. The plot was engaging and original for me and the world, culture, and customs were incredibly well thought out. The pacing was nearly perfect and the whole story was built on a strong foundation.
However, there are some pretty staggering weaknesses, firstly, both Thaydor and Wrynne are nearly flawless, no matter who you are, no one is a true paragon, not even the Paladin of Ilios nor a Daughter of the Rose. I think their weaknesses and flaws could have been a a lot more prominent. Any and all conflict with the characters seemed to be glossed over in an almost paraphrase of their reconciliation. There also was no point in the novel where I was truly holding my breath in suspense of what is to happen. The whole book seemed as if it were just a fairy tail told for the sake of telling it.
In short, the characters could have been fleshed out a little bit more and some of the religious themes could have been down played and I want stronger conflict.
While I understand Mrs. Foley does write 'clean' young adult fiction under another name, I believe she needs to take a stronger, and more mature stand if she intends to continue writing Adult Fiction. Throwing in some watered down sex scenes does not a 'dirty' Adult Fantasy novel make. I want my gut wrench when the hero faces hardship and self doubt and the heroine faces the insurmountable realization that her death could be imminent.
The Paladin's Prize is a good start, but I expect to see a lot of improvement as I continue the series, if it is going to keep pace with the other authors of the genre. The Age of Heroes series needs to lose the young adult feel and start truly catering to it's demographic, which I assume are people like myself over 18 and have read a fair few of these novels. My tastes tend to run more to mature themes, and bloodier battles.

Spicier, and more detailed naughty bits.
More internal and external character strife.
More detail in battle scenes, I want to see the death, almost feel the cold metal sword drain the life character I hold so dear.
I would recommend this book to a fourteen year old, just breaking into the Adult Fantasy genre.

P.S.- I did really like this book, for all the flaws I found, it is a delightful and quick read.

Pleasantly Surprised

Let me preface my review, 7th grade honors English and Tolkien ruined the fantasy genre for me 25+ years ago. However, that being said, I really enjoyed this book. Foley did an amazing job describing what needed to be described (creatures and places beyond our realm) without going on ad nauseam leaving nothing to your imagination. I have read all of her historical romance novels and she did a fabulous job of integrating her romance style into the fantasy genre.
I have always loved an author who can build loveable peripheral characters and Gaelen Foley excels in that arena. I finished the book yesterday and still can’t decide if she should write Jonty, Novus, or Renulf’s book as her next installment (I think I’m leaning more toward Novus). I really enjoyed all of the characters, even the obnoxious mother-in-law. I was given this book by the author for an honest review, but will be buying further installments as they are written. I’m not sure I would have bought this book and would have missed a great read. I am also going to purchase The Gryphon Chronicles (written by Foley and spouse) to read with my 12 year old. I dismissed them when they were released because of the genre. I really hope they are as well written because my son will be thrilled I am reading “his kind” of books.

Great book

The book starts with the Golden Knight, Sir Thaydor Clarebeld is left for dead after a brutal and costly battle only one woman Wrynne du Mere can save him by doing the kiss of light which will connect them. Wrynne must use the spell she can only perform once in her life. But Wrynne knows that Thaydor is the chosen one to save and guide her people and it is her duty to restore him to his place of honor in the court. Right now Thaydor may be banished from his rightly place but through her healing he will stand again strong regardless of where he might be called to lead.
Once his strength is restored Thaydor and Wrynne join together on a journey that takes them from the darkest of how in real their reality is. Their kingdom has fallen into depravity, the people fear for the people seek a savior who can save them. Individually Thaydor and Wrynne have strong magic and they realize there is a reason they have been joined for life.
Gaelen Foley has risen to the task as a great author who can expand her genres. I am read more regency romance but I really did enjoy this book. Each book she writes shows an unrivaled depth in her characters an a great storyline. So I hope you enjoyed it too.
