Merridew is truly a master with words, crafting three heartfelt and intriguing stories, and then cleverly intertwining them at the end. Every word of the collection feels genuine and from the heart. The insight J. Merridew provides into contemporary suburban life is both chilling and somehow comforting, as it reminds us that we are not alone in our feelings of inadequacy and our never-ending desire to fit in. "Fireworks Over Suburbia" is a must-read for anyone who is in high school, has ever been in high school, or who simply finds him or herself constantly conforming to society's will.

Amazing

This collection is incredible for the young adult. With three short stories, it is fast paced, but it is not meaningless. There is symbolism in everything and the three characters can be easily related to. J. Merridew has given teenagers a unique voice and I believe everyone could benefit from reading this collection.

Fireworks Over Suburbia addresses a topic most others wouldn't dare do: society's flaws. The quote that comes to mind when I think of the overall theme of these stories is "where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise." The author brings hidden shoved away problems of everyday suburbia to light, and puts them into a story that will be left etched in your mind for days. For, everyone has felt the dying desire to fit in, to be one of the cool kids, and to most importantly feel wanted during the most frustrating years of adolescence.
